The Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton film about notorious US gang boss Whitey Bulger is now set for a September 18 release in 2015.

"Black Mass," directed by longtime Depp collaborator Scott Cooper, has the "Pirates of the Carribean" actor in the lead role as Boston's Bulger, with Cumberbatch as his state senator brother Billy Bulger, and Joel Edgerton as John Connolly, the FBI agent who was supposed to be Whitey's handler.

Whitey was on the run for over 16 years, having used his status as an FBI informant to orchestrate the suppression of a rival crime family, and turning several FBI agents to his cause along the way.

Featuring in prominent supporting roles are Jesse Plemons as Whitey's criminal ally Kevin Weeks and Sienna Miller as Catherine Greig, who fled Boston with Bulger and was captured alongside him outside an apartment complex in Santa Monica. Kevin Bacon is the most recent cast addition, as Connolly's FBI boss.

The film is based on a 2001 biography of the same name, written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill.

Its September 18 scheduling gives it the same opening date as exploration adventure "Everest," directed by Baltasar Kormákur with an ensemble cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, John Hawkes and Sam Worthington.
