Jon Stewart to Caitlyn Jenner: ‘Welcome to being a woman in America’

“Welcome to being a woman in America.”

That was Jon Stewart’s message to Caitlyn Jenner on “The Daily Show” Tuesday, a day after the former Olympian and current reality television star made her transgender debut on the cover of Vanity Fair.

Stewart mocked the media’s coverage of Jenner’s transition, playing a montage of various television anchors discussing her looks.

“Caitlyn, when you were a man, we could talk about your athleticism, your business acumen,” Stewart said. “But now you’re a woman, which means your looks are really the only thing we care about. Which brings us to Phase 2 of your transition: comparative f---ability.”

The Comedy Central host then showed more clips of anchors comparing Jenner to her ex-wife, Kris Jenner, stepdaughter Kim Kardashian and the actress Jessica Lange.

“Look, we want to give a woman a compliment here,” Stewart said sarcastically. “We just need to make sure another woman gets taken down a peg in the process.”

Cable news anchors weren’t the only media members fixated on Jenner’s appearance.

On Monday, the Associated Press was criticized for referring to her “ample cleavage” in its story about the “va-va-voom” cover.

“Bruce Jenner makes his debut as a transgender woman in a va-va-voom cover for the July issue of Vanity Fair,” the AP tweeted.

And as Media Matters pointed out, the news service violated its own style guidelines on how to refer to transgender people by not using Jenner’s preferred pronoun.
