Jon Stewart Gives Republicans the Old-Fashioned Shaming They Deserve

While everyone rushed to Twitter to shame John Travolta for screwing up Idina Menzel's name at the Oscars, Jon Stewart took the beginning of The Daily Show last night to remind America of a "truly shameful behavior that for some reason did not explode the Twitterverse" – Republicans' latest blocking of legislation in the Senate.

Late last week, Republicans in the Senate blocked a bill that would have expanded education and healthcare benefits to U.S. veterans, because they argued that it added too much to the budget deficit.

Yes, withholding benefits for veterans is deserving of a good, public shaming. And yet, Stewart points out, our shaming of Senate Republicans' latest exploits was woefully inadequate: "The relative lack of shaming aimed at Republican Senators fucking over veterans shows a real problem with our nation's Shame-O-Meter."

The problem, you see, is Republicans' reasoning for blocking the bill. Sure, it would cost about $24 billion, and "the VA is wasteful, often ineffective, this is true, and adds to the debt for this bill, but apparently those were things these Senators didn't worry about in 2008, when they voted to continue funding the Iraq war despite the Pentagon being unable to account for a missing $15 billion worth of shit that we bought," Stewart said.

A representative from the American Legion called the failure of the bill "inexcusable." He's right. So for a proper shaming, Stewart brought out a "nun."

There, that should do it. Wait, what's that? Republicans want to tie veterans' benefits to an Iran sanctions bill? And one GOP Senator blocked a floor debate on sexual assault in the military, also demanding an Iran sanctions bill?

Oh, for goodness sake.
