Jordan releases Libyan as ambassador still held
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan has released a Libyan serving a life sentence for a plan to suicide bomb an airport as its ambassador to Libya remains held captive by gunmen there.
Lawyer Moussa al-Abdallat said that Libyan detainee Mohammed al-Darsi had been transferred to Libya on Friday. Al-Darsi was arrested and convicted in 2007 of trying to bomb Amman's Queen Alia International Airport.
Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Sabah al-Rafei declined to discuss al-Darsi being released.
Gunmen abducted Ambassador Fawaz al-Etan from his vehicle in central Tripoli near the Jordanian Embassy on April 15.
Abductions have been rife in Libya since the country's 8-month civil war ended with Moammar Gadhafi's killing in October 2011. Diplomats and journalists have been among those targeted in the kidnappings.
