Jordan's king says Arab Spring bad for Israel

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan's King Abdullah II, one of Israel's few remaining close allies in the Muslim world, said in remarks obtained Monday that the uprisings sweeping Arab nations have put the Jewish state in a difficult position. He also hotly rejected the notion that his country should take in Palestinians as a substitute for the creation of a state for them.

Abdullah told a closed meeting of Jordanian intellectuals and academics that Jordan and the Palestinians were now in a stronger position than Israel, whose current government fears growing isolation as a result of the Middle East's transformative changes in the Arab Spring.

"Jordan and the future of Palestine are stronger than Israel. It is the Israelis who are worried today," Abdullah told the audience late Sunday. A transcript of his comments was obtained from the Royal Palace on Monday.

Besides Jordan, Egypt is the only other Arab nation to have signed a peace deal with Israel. But its ties with Egypt have been severely strained since the February ouster of Hosni Mubarak and the anti-Israeli sentiment that has burst into the open in the Arab world's most populous nation — most visibly in the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo over the weekend.

Many in Israel fear that this year's Arab uprisings — along with a diplomatic crisis with former partner Turkey and stalled peace talks with the Palestinians — have left their nation increasingly isolated. Adding to that sense, the Palestinians are taking their quest for statehood to the United Nations later this month.

King Abdullah said that during a recent visit to the United States, an Israeli intellectual told him that the Arab Spring serves Israeli interests. "I answered: 'On the contrary, you are today in a more difficult position than before,'" he recalled saying. He did not elaborate.

Abdullah also used unusually harsh language for him in condemning suggestions by some Israeli fringe elements that Jordan should take in Palestinians from the West Bank to substitute for the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.

"Jordan will never be a substitute land for anyone," he said. "It makes no sense. ... We have an army and we are ready to fight for our homeland and the future of Jordan. We should speak loudly and not allow such an idea to remain in the minds of some of us."

"Jordan is Jordan, and Palestine is Palestine," he added.

The idea of Jordan replacing Palestine has been around for decades. It never had mainstream support in Israel, and now its backers are a tiny, extreme minority. Even Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, once a champion of Israel's retaining control of the West Bank, grudgingly supports creation of a Palestinian state there.

A significant portion of Jordan's population has never been enthusiastic about the country's 1994 peace treaty with Israel. Anger with Israel is running high in Jordan for a number of reasons. In particular, Netanyahu's hard-line government is deeply distrusted in Jordan, and many Jordanians blame it for the failure of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks to get off the ground two years ago.

Nearly half of Jordan's 6 million people are Palestinians displaced in two wars with Israel since 1948, along with their descendants.

The rest of Jordan's population comes from Bedouin tribes that make up the backbone of support for King Abdullah and the royal family. They fear that a "Jordanian solution" would mean the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank to Jordan, throwing off the demographic balance.

Abdullah, whose own leadership has faced some protests this year — albeit on a lesser scale than elsewhere in the Arab world — reiterated that he was pressing ahead with political reforms in the kingdom.

He said Jordan will hold municipal elections this year and announced that parliamentary elections will be held in 2012. Jordan's opposition parties alleged that elections for parliament in 2010 were flawed.

All these "experts" are still thinking there's just one kind of muzzie. Of course the Jordanians don't want the Palis- nobody does! Jordanians found out the hard way about Palestinian refugees. It's like taking home a stray dog and then finding out it's got rabies. Google Black September and the Lebanese Civil War if you're considering Pali neighbors.
I absolutely support King Abdullah, and so should everyone else- He's progressive, moderate and he actually wants peace and stability. Most Jordanians are loyal Bedouins, but there's a bad element, too, especially in this younger generation.
We need him in control of the country between the West Bank and Syria. Because if it gets down to just Israel and all the whackjobs, we're ALL going to war.

Why not the Jordanian share their land to the Palestenian and made their fusion as brother. It will be a great symbol of brotherly embrace as an Arab family. The Arab are popularly knows for fighting. If they take the Palestinian, they will be world hero- a regional peace and prosperity. The Arab world will be prosperous and so is Israel. Everybody happy.

The Word of God still echoes that He will bless those His children and curse those who curse His people. We can learn the hates made by the Spanish, the Germans and now its becoming in the U.S. From a great nation troubles comes economically etc. We need to pray and bless the small nation being persecuted by the Arabs and the Pagan West.

Many in the Arab, the West, and World will not be sympathetic Israel. Such time they will look to the Messiah. They will realize that Jesus the victim being crucified is the victor, and will be their salvation. They will honor Him as Lord of all. Such will happen soon. Jesus will be their salvation individually and as a nation.

Zionists, armed with US weapons and supported by right wing christians, want to force the world to accept their claim on all Palestine, a claim based on a false biblical mythology. Their aim is to get rid of all the native Palestinians by expulsion or murder. The Palestinians' strong will to fight, accompanied by an awakening in many parts of the world and the change in the Arab world, is making it harder for Israel to achieve its goals. The zionists who came to Palestine after 1948 would surely make a wise decision if they decide to pack up and return where they came from on their own..
      • Marc 8 mths ago
Well, since the Muzlams say their Koran is based on the bible, then I guess their claim is bogus, too.

        Next.
      • Atheist 8 mths ago
It is good that you admit that your biblical claim is bogus in your own words, The only thing is that Palestinians consist of many different sects and religions: there are Christians, Moslems (who by the way do not claim Palestine based on the Quran), Jews, Druze, Bahais, and some non-believers.. They all lived peacefully before 1948. It was only when the zionist terrorists started killing Palestinians that the trouble came to the region.

There will not be peace for Israel if they go back to the 1948 borders. The Arab nations are calling for Israel's annihilation.
Also, that cleric in Iraq ( the one that told his followers not to attack US troops) has the desire to start attacking Israel ( the occupiers of the Holy Land) after we leave his country.
The Palestinians will not even honor a cease fire.
Israel has been dealing with terrorist attacks sense 1948.

If an Israeli and Palestinians are so similar call a Palestinian a JEW.

The Arabs have to stop looking at Israel, the US and the West as adversaries and as a problem. If they can ever do that, they will be able to prosper and regain dignity as a people and as nations. One only has to look at the mostly non-adversarial relationship now enjoyed by the aforementioned and the former USSR and China and before that Japan and Germany.

i don't think they are capable of viewing the people you mentioned as friends and not enemies... It goes against their religion and culture.

"Israel" is only a temporary project for the so called "holocaust survivors to take a break for a few years before they'll be dumped in the gas chambers.

The United States needs to do a little spring cleaning themselfs... Start with taking all our troops and bring them back from all Arab countries... then stop sending millions .. keep the money at home. Let these violent muslims kill each it's not like we care. If they happen to have the nerve to attack at home again, choose a muslim target and use tactical nuclear weapons on them, maybe they will think about it next time.. repeat if necessary. We do not need any of those uncivilized people, they do not offer the world and the rest of the civilized world anything at all... Happy spring cleaning

the problem is that the people paying the big bucks to presidential campaigns have "interests in the middle east" ie: oil.
    • altbin  •  8 mths ago
      Yet again people forget that Jordan did in fact give a great chunk of their country to Palestinians ,who promptly tried to kill the Royal Family {look up black September its not for Munich}

Israel went to their doctor and got some allergy spray for their nose. The spray bottle had to be enlarged with an industrial sprayer.

Arabs are Arabs, even Hashemite Bedouins. There is no such thing as a Jordanian or a Palestinian. Can anyone tell me what the Jordanian or Palestinian languages are or national histories of these fictitious people? Where are the artifacts? Trans Jordan was partitioned in 1948 which gave 95% to the Arabs becoming Jordan with the remaining 5% to the Jews, becoming tiny Israel. But that was too much land to spare for the Jewish people. Now the whole Muslim World wakes up angry every morning since 1948 merely for the reason Israel exists, occupying .00001 % of the Muslim lands. They fail to realize that 1/3 of Israel's population is Muslim Arab.

The Israeli right wingnuts are really crazy if they think expelling the remainder of the Arab population of Palestine to Jordan would be good for them. A strong Palestinian majority in Jordan would result in a real hardening of Jordanian policy and attitudes toward Israel, and eventual Palestinian control of the government of Jordan, as well. At the same time, such action would also cement and reinforce hostile attitudes in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Saudi Arabia, would provide impetus for pan-Arab unity, and for cooperation between the Arab and non-Arab states, such as Iran and Turkey. Anti-Semitism was a terrible problem in many places in the world, for centuries, but imposing a Jewish "Apartheid" state upon Arabs in Palestine was not a wise or effective remedy... it hasn't made the Jews who emigrated from Europe or America safer (today, Jews are safer in the West than in Israel), but just created new and different dangers.

      Dismantle israel NOW!
Apartheid, racist exclusionary state, supported by USA to the detriment of ALL Americans except the zionists.
    • CHESTER KING  •  8 mths ago
God certainly does not need America's help. The Israeli settlers say God gave them the Palestinian people's land. If so, they need no help from the USA. They are able to make their own brass horns to knock down Gaza and their own staves that can turn into snakes and part the Red Sea. There is no reason for us to be involved. If we have faith in God we do not need to worry about their problems.

Sounds like the opening "Prologue" to the final "War" in the Middle-East, let's get it done, sooner rather than later, like the Nazi's of decades past, we must destroy the forces of evil which would see Israel wiped off the face of the Earth, Shalom.

You may be wondering why the Jewish people have made so much contributions in the arts, entertainment, business, scientific discoveries, medicine, ratio of Nobel Prize recipients to population, etc etc. Even Christianity was founded on a Jewish Rabbi Jesus Christ. Christianity took off to become the largest religion in the world and gave birth to world civilization, which in today's modern world created an environment where judiciall systems and progress can flourish and benifit all humankind. Not just for Jews and Christians but for all humans.

God was not kidding when be stated: "I will bless those who bless you (the Jews), and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." -- Genesis 12:3

Look at the ongoing state of Islamic nations throughout the centuries, their continued military and national defeats, and even the mayhem in their nations today. Are they blessed or are they under a curse? Why has nothing significant to human progress even come out of these Muslim countries?
