July 9: National Sugar Cookie Day, Nude Recreation Week, Town Crier Day, National Farriers Week

    National Sugar Cookie Day

You'll have to search far and wide for a holiday more delicious than July 9 -- It's "National Sugar Cookie Day." One of the most versatile cookies around, we use them to celebrate everything from Christmas to St. Patrick's Day. It seems only fitting that they should have a day of their very own. You can get the whole family involved in the celebration by trying one of these mouth-watering recipes and sugar cookie decorating tips from Yahoo! Shine:

    Nude Recreation Week

July 9 kicks off "Nude Recreation Week," where everyone -- male, female, young and old -- is encouraged to get out and have some naked fun! Although this holiday might not be for everyone, it is interesting, to say the least. The Naturalist Society suggests we celebrate by visiting a clothing optional beach and working on our "all-over" tan. The American Association for Nude Recreation is sponsoring its annual event -- Amazing Canvas Nudist Face & Body Painting -- at locations across the country. It all sounds like a great way to get our naked on (or off).

    Town Crier Day

Believe it or not, widespread literacy is a luxury of modern times. In the old days, town criers were the source of most people's news, and their profession was much revered. Celebrating "Town Crier Day" is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself and your family in history and have some fun at the same time.

Here are some interesting town crier facts:

    * It was once considered an act of treason to interfere with a town crier performing his job.

    * A town crier's familiar call of "Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!" comes from the French meaning "Listen!"

    * There are still about 200 active town criers in Britain, most of whom work at special events and in the tourism industry.

    National Farriers Week

Anyone who owns or regularly rides horses understands the importance of a good farrier. This year we celebrate the 13th annual "National Farriers Week" to honor and thank those skilled tradesmen who keep our horses' hooves in tiptop shape. Even if you don't own a horse, you can celebrate by taking a trail ride at a nearby stable or hosting a horseshoe throwing tournament in your backyard. While you're at it, why not amaze your guests by touting your knowledge of horse trivia? For instance, did you know that in 1842 the average cost of shoeing a horse was either 50 cents or a load of corn?

At first I thought the IRS scandal was leaked to distract from the Benghazi scandal. But that didn't make sense because the IRS scandal is a more obvious abuse of power than the White House lying about the murder of four Americans in Libya. Before I had resolved which scandal was distracting from which, we found out the Department of Justice was spying on The Associated Press -- not to protect national security, but to prevent the AP from scooping the White House. Then, this week, it broke that the Department of Justice was also spying on Fox News for reasons that remain unexplained. ...
