National Career Nursing Assistants Day

June 13 - 20, 2013 is the 36th annual National Nursing Assistants Week, and June 13 is "National Career Nursing Assistants Day." This special day is sponsored by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants, and is designed to "recognize nursing assistants who have dedicated their lives to the well-being of others for 5 to as many as 58 years."

Being a nursing assistant is a difficult and often thankless job that requires knowledge, commitment and compassion. Many times it is a nursing assistant who cares for our elderly and disabled in hospitals and long-term care facilities. They deserve this special day of recognition and thanks.

If you have a special nursing assistant in your life, be sure to reach out to them on June 13 and let them know they are appreciated. You can even bake them some yummy Salty Chocolate Chunk Cookies from Yahoo! Shine to say thank-you!

National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day

Some of us are born chefs … others? Not so much. June 13 is "National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day" and if you're like me, reading that instantly brought someone to mind.

Did you know that Americans eat nearly half their meals out? If you're one of those who don't cook because of your innate kitchen "klutzery" here are four reasons you should consider cooking at home:

* It's better for the environment.

* It's less expensive than eating out.

* It's healthier than eating out

* Home-cooked meals taste better!

Sewing Machine Day

When's the last time anyone in your household used a sewing machine? The fact is, although many of us have them, not nearly as many of us actually use them! June 13 is "Sewing Machine Day" and encourages all of us to dig out and dust off our sewing machines and put them to good use.

Isaac Merrit Singer is the inventor of the first commercially successful sewing machine. In 1850 his revamped design made it possible to sew on any part of a garment or project. The Industrial Revolution made machine-tooled parts readily available, and by 1867 Singer sewing machines were a success around the world.
