National Catfish Day
Although farm-raised catfish is on the decline in the United States, in 2009 Americans still consumed nearly one pound per person. That may be surprising, considering that catfish have historically had a reputation for being mud-laden bottom feeders.
But farm-raised catfish are a different animal. On the farm, according to Roger Barlow of the Catfish Institute in Jackson, Miss., catfish aren't "scavengers, as in nature, but rather sweet-tasting surface-feeders, raised in well water and fattened on corn and soy."
June 25 is "National Catfish Day," designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 to celebrate "the value of farm-raised catfish." If you haven't sampled this fresh water favorite in a while, now would be a good time to give it a try. Why not try one of these tasty recipes from Yahoo! Shine?
June 25 marks the half-way point to Christmas. This special day is dubbed "LEON Day" because LEON is noel spelled backwards. This serves as a friendly reminder to all those who like to start their shopping early that there are only 182 shopping days left until Christmas!
But research shows that the majority of Americans are last-minute shoppers, doing the bulk of their holiday purchasing in the last week prior to December 25. So how should we celebrate this not-so-festive day? Here are some ideas to kick around:
* Buy some pine-scented room freshener and spray it throughout your house.
* Make some homemade eggnog.
* Greet your friends and family with "Merry LEON!"
* Watch "A Christmas Story," or at least enjoy the trailers on Yahoo! Movies.
Strawberry Parfait Day
Although the word "parfait" is used to describe a variety of different desserts, in the U.S. it is generally recognized as an ice cream or yogurt dish, layered together with other ingredients such as nuts or fruit.
In fact, largely due to the trend in America to eat more healthy foods, yogurt has begun to inch out ice cream as the base for most parfaits. Fast-food restaurants have even jumped on the yogurt parfait bandwagon, with a popular chain offering a yogurt, fruit and granola mix whose 5.3 ounce serving still packs a whopping 224 calorie, 44.7 gram carbohydrate punch!
But hey, it's dessert, so who's counting calories? June 25 is "Strawberry Parfait Day," so I say throw caution to the wind and try this scrumptious recipe for a Roasted Strawberry Parfait from Yahoo! Shine.
