June Third Baseman Rankings

Matthew Pouliot breaks down the June third baseman rankings

Welcome to the June third baseman rankings update. Players are ranked for the rest of the season based on a 5x5 scoring format. Included along with the position rankings is an updated top 300. Players are listed wherever they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

Dropping off: Casey McGehee (39th)

o The Rangers haven’t announced what they’ll do to replace Beltre (thumb) at the hot corner. Hopefully, it’ll be just a three-week injury, and if the Rangers think that’ll be the case, I doubt they’ll want to turn to Gallo. Gallo has incredible power and he was hitting .314/.425/.636 with Double-A Frisco, but that came with 49 strikeouts in 34 games. He’s not nearly ready to hit for average in the majors, and he’s not stellar defensively, either. I’m morbidly curious to see what would happen if the Rangers did promote him - he would hit some bombs - but I don’t think it’s in their best interests. Of course, an Adam Rosales-Hanser Alberto combo isn’t very attractive, either.

o Uribe is gone from L.A., but I still couldn’t see moving up either Turner or Guerrero overly much, particularly not with Hector Olivera potentially on the way after the All-Star break. Both Turner and Guerrero are fine to use in mixed leagues now since Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford are out, but the playing-time situation will soon get crowded again.
