Jury reaches verdict in 1996 Tucson car bomb case
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Jurors have reached a verdict in the trial of a once-prominent Aspen, Colo., socialite charged in the 1996 Tucson car-bomb killing of her ex-husband.
Pima County Superior Court officials say the verdict will be read at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Lawyers for Pamela Phillips argued their client had nothing to gain from the death of businessman Gary Triano, and that she was a successful real estate broker.
Prosecutors described her as a gold digger who hired a former boyfriend to kill Triano to collect on a $2 million life insurance policy.
Phillips pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The ex-boyfriend was convicted in 2010 and sentenced to two life terms.
Triano died in November 1996 when his car exploded outside a Tucson country club.
