'Just Sayin!': Matt Damon Pokes Fun at Fellow Oscar Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio and The Revenant's Brutal Shoot

It's Best Actor vs. Best Actor.

During Saturday evening's Directors Guild of America Awards in Los Angeles, Leonardo DiCaprio was on the receiving end of some gentle ribbing at the hands of fellow Oscar-nominated actor Matt Damon.

As Damon introduced Ridley Scott, who directed Damon in The Martian, the 45-year-old actor referenced the iconic filmmaker's insistence that shooting end each day at the same time.

"Every night at 6 o'clock, the horn blew and Ridley and I went to dinner," Damon started. "And that's how you make a movie, and we finished the film really early and we saved 2 million bucks."

Damon then turned to DiCaprio, 41, and added wryly: "And Leo – we weren't cold at all. I'm just sayin'. There's another way to do it."

The quip – a reference to The Revenant's brutal yearlong shoot and $135 million budget – had DiCaprio and the film's director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, both laughing.

By comparison, Scott's The Martian was shot over just 70 days and cost $27 million less to produce.

DiCaprio is likely no stranger to Damon's sense of humor having worked with him on the 2006's The Departed.

Saturday's awards were attended by a who's who of Hollywood heavyweights, including Steven Spielberg, Bryan Cranston, Paul Haggis, Geena Davis, Lily Tomlin, Christian Bale, Steve Carrell, and Ryan Gosling.

With The Revenant taking tops honors at the Directors Guild Awards, González Iñárritu appears to be a lock for the directing Oscar. The race for best film is getting more unpredictable, as Spotlight was named best film at the Screen Actors Guild Awards with The Big Short winning in that category at the Producers Guild Awards. The Revenant took home the Golden Globe for best motion picture, drama, and The Martian snagged the same award for comedy.
