Just Stop Asking About the 'Gone Girl' Movie Ending Already
We here at The Wire are plenty excited for Gone Girl. The book had us riveted, largely because its twists and turns managed to surprise over and over again. And that's exactly why all the attention to the movie's possibly new ending is so frustrating.
To recap: director David Fincher told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that author Gillian Flynn had revamped the entire third act of the story for the screenplay adaptation. ("Started from scratch" was his phrase of choice.) This sent everyone into a mild panic.
Trying to water the flames, Flynn said that things had been "greatly exaggerated" in a Reddit AMA, and that "the mood, tone and spirit of the book are very much intact." She didn't say specifically that the ending wasn't changed, however, so Entertainment Weekly decided to go back to the well in their new Fall Movie Preview issue story about the film.
Vulture has the new quotes: Fincher said the film changed "everything and nothing," and that they're only modifying "the bone structure and the muscles and the skin. And the hair. It's all of its outer sheathing. But at its core, it's exactly what I think Gillian always intended." That's a frustratingly vague quote, but the response to this isn't to dig deeper. It's to take a breath and step away.

Gone Girl the film has to be given the chance to be different than Gone Girl the novel. Getting anxious about the ending before the film has even been seen is just asking for agita. The spirit of Flynn's story is in not trying to spoil yourself and embracing each thrilling turn. We've been waiting quite some time already to see Fincher's adaptation. We can cool our heels until October 3 to learn how it ends.
