Kara Kennedy, daughter of Ted Kennedy, dies at 51

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kara Kennedy accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom with tears welling in her eyes on behalf of her ailing father at a 2009 White House ceremony but also managed a smile as Sen. Ted Kennedy's life was honored. After the Democratic senator died two weeks later following a battle with brain cancer, his only daughter read a psalm at his funeral Mass in Boston, moving many.

The eldest of the senator's three children, Kara Kennedy died Friday at age 51, collapsing after her daily workout at a Washington health club. The cause of death wasn't immediately released.

Though she had never sought elected office like many in her famously political family, she helped with her father's presidential and Senate campaigns and heeded his call to give back through public service. She worked as a filmmaker and in television and was active in an array of causes from the arts to battling fetal alcohol syndrome.

She herself had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002, but underwent surgery the following year that doctors had said was successful.

But her brother, Patrick Kennedy, said her cancer treatment — surgery and grueling chemotherapy and radiation — left her physically weakened.

"Her heart gave out," said Patrick Kennedy, a former Democratic congressman from Rhode Island.

    "She's with dad."

In a telephone interview from her Boston home Saturday, Joan Bennett Kennedy said she and her daughter were "best friends" who liked to take long swims together and enjoyed walks on the beach. She said her daughter had fully recovered from cancer and didn't have any lingering health issues.

"She was very healthy. That's why this is such a shock," Joan Kennedy said.

Kara Kennedy was a member of the Sport & Health fitness center, though spokeswoman Nancy Terry declined to release further details about the death, citing member privacy. A spokeswoman for the District of Columbia medical examiner said in an email that the cause of death was pending.

Kennedy's ex-husband, Michael Allen, said she frequently visited the club and went swimming every day if she could.

"Her legacy is one of courage and grit and determination in the face of her own illness and in the face of many family tragedies and limitless, absolutely limitless, devotion to our children," he said.

Kara Kennedy was born in 1960 to Edward and Joan Kennedy, just as her father was on the campaign trail for his brother John F. Kennedy during the presidential primaries.

The late senator wrote of his oldest child in his 2009 memoir, "True Compass," that "I had never seen a more beautiful baby, nor been happier in my life."

Later, she appeared with her father during his unsuccessful 1980 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, and she and her brother Edward Kennedy Jr. helped run the senator's 1988 re-election campaign.

A graduate of Tufts University, Kara Kennedy also helped produce several videos for Very Special Arts, an organization founded by her aunt Jean Kennedy Smith. She also served as a board member for the Edward M. Kennedy Institute; director emerita and national trustee of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation; and as a national advisory board member for the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Her lung cancer diagnosis came in 2002, and the prognosis was grim. But the family refused to accept that, the senator wrote. She had an operation in 2003, and Edward Kennedy accompanied his daughter to chemotherapy treatments.

"Kara responded to my exhortations to have faith in herself," he wrote later. "Today, nearly seven years later as I write this, Kara is a healthy, vibrant, active mother of two who is flourishing."

Her children, Grace and Max, are now teenagers.

Kara Kennedy's two brothers have dealt with health issues of their own: Edward Kennedy Jr. lost a leg to bone cancer as a child, and Patrick Kennedy had surgery in 1988 to remove a non-cancerous tumor that was pressing against his spine.

"Her magnificent strength in her successful battle with lung cancer was a quiet inspiration to all of us and provided her family and fellow patients with hope," the Edward M. Kennedy Institute said in a statement.

In August 2009 Kara Kennedy accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, on behalf of her father. Tears filled her eyes as the senator's accomplishments were read aloud. She smiled when President Barack Obama, whom Ted Kennedy had endorsed in 2008, put his arm around her shoulder in a comforting way.

A funeral Mass was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Church in Washington. Burial will be private.

There are so many haters on here . Just because her father and some of the other Kennedys were bad doesn't mean she was . In fact she managed to stay out of the publics eye . She was a human being and I hope she went to Heaven and is at peace . I'll bet each one of you has some bad family members somewhere in their family tree although you probably won't admit it. She was not her father . Prayers to her family at this difficult time .

My prayers go out to her family. To those who make fun of the dead. Karma is real and remember that, when your child, parent, spouse, and sibling get sick or die. Think about what you have said and how you acted.

Strange, but true that good souls suffer more, and leave earlier than so many sick of mind pinheads that wake up in the morning figuring how and who they are going to pester today!
It seems that they do not even get a tooth ache.

GOD is gracious and He is waiting on the pinheads to realize, He's GOD, not them, and yes they really do need Him.

First thing is , they ahve to admit they have a problem and what they really are.

When Roberto Clemente was killed on a help mission he sponsored, I asked a friend how come such a decent young man was taken so early in life? He answered: "There is so much evil on Earth, that he needs the help of the good ones in Heaven."

You people posting all these nasty comments have some serious issues in your own life. This is about a woman who has passed away after a long battle with lung cancer. She just happened to be a member of a famous family. May God bless her & comfort the ones she left behind. May you rest in peace Kara!

Those of you making such nasty, spiteful comments about her appearance - are either dumb as a box of rocks, or you are being willfully ignorant concerning the toll chronic illnesses / disease takes on the human body.

My mum died eight months ago at the age of 72. When she was younger she did everything right, no smoking, no drinking, she stayed out of the sun because she had very fair skin, she ate healthy. But there were only two things she couldn't control - she was born with scoliosis and she was very small boned and slender - about 5'2" and 93 lbs.

Several years ago, despite taking medication for her bones, the osteoporosis grew markedly worse. Because of the scoliosis her back became horribly twisted, her lungs were compressed, her stomach was affected, although she tried to keep her discomfort to herself, the pain grew chronic, more severe.

By last December she couldn't even walk across her lounge with a walker. She seemed to shrink, her face was so sunken and there were so many wrinkles - she looked older than her mum - who was 94. When my mum died I was devastated, but at the same time I was grateful because her suffering was finally over.

At the funeral home, when I saw her for the first time, I couldn't believe it - she looked beautiful, she looked at peace, because she wasn't in pain anymore, she wasn't sick anymore. Unless you have had a family member who has suffered from some ailment or disease for many years - I don't think you can imagine the toll it takes on them emotionally and physically.

And the fact that you are celebrating - and mocking - this woman and her entire family's pain and suffering - it shows that your soul / your conscience - if you even have one - is sicker, uglier, and more twisted - that my mum's back was during those last, worst, weeks of her life. If there is any justice in this world - you will reap the ugliness that you sew, it will be visited upon you ten fold.

Remember... you're talking about real people here guys. She did good; not harm. She has teenagers, for Goodness sakes... they just lost their mother. If your child read some of these comments about you.... how'd you feel? Get real people. Don't fault them for having more money than you.... I thought that was the American way...... and, oh, I thought it the American way to be good to your neighbors and kind. Starting to wonder what country I live in now.

What happened to the good people of yesterdays? Everyone is lashing out at this woman just because she is a Kennedy. Have a heart, people? Where are your morals?
      • HSL 8 mths ago
Because Kennedy's are evil. They have brought more destruction on the US through open border policy and the spread of socialism than Osama bin Laden could have dreamed of.

I can't believe what I am reading! A woman dies of cancer and it sets off the meanest set of comments I have ever seen. In spite of her poor health and the many challenges that members of her family have faced, she gave so much of
her time and effort to numerous charitable institutions and causes. Would all of you who have filled this space with such negative and abusive words, spend your time working as hard as she did to help others. I am disappointed that Facebook allows such hateful verbage.

The Kennedys have done more to help this country that you have. For starters they saved us from nuclear war - twice. Some people criticize President Kennedy for the Bay of Pigs. Well, they need to read a history book because Allen Dulles, the CIA Director, even admitted (and it's in his own handwriting) that the plans they presented Kennedy with were designed to fail.

They knew the invasion couldn't succeed without air support and the military was dying to launch a full scale invasion of Cuba - and act which would've led to a nuclear war with the Soviets. Dulles and the rest of those jackholes honestly believed that when it became clear the invasion was going to fail, President Kennedy would cave in and give the CIA and the military exactly what they wanted - air support and the leeway to launch the invasion. But, as JFK so eloquently said - They don't know me very well, do they?

He practically saved half the world during the Cuban Missile Crisis. That psycho Gen. Curtis LeMay was creaming his tighty whiteys he was so desperate to launch a first strike against the Soviets. An act which - again - would've led to a nuclear war. in which millions of innocent people around the world would've died.

Instead, JFK had the cajones to tell LeMay to take that cigar he was perpetually puffing on and shove it right up his butt. He sent Bobby to meet with the Soviet ambassador and that's when they came up with the plan - the Soviets would withdraw the missiles from Cuba and in exchange America would remove missiles from Turkey. Millions of lives around the world were saved thanks to the Kennedys. And oh my, wasn't the military furious.

The Kennedys helped create the Peace Corps, the Special Olympics. They supported the Peace Process in Ireland. Thanks to Sen. Ted Kennedy's support, thousands of Irish and British people are alive today. He also supported the calls to have the British investigated for the numerous human rights violations and murders of innocent civilians they were responsible for. See: the murders of solicitors Patrick Finucane and Rosemary Nelson, and the massacre of 13 unarmed civil rights protestors on Bloody Sunday.

Also: Indianapolis '68. When MLK was assassinated, scores of cities across the country went up in flames. There were terrible riots, but that didn't happen in Indianapolis. Bobby Kennedy had the courage to stand before that crowd, in such a volatile situation, and that speech he gave, pleading for calm, sharing their grief - ensured peace in that city. There is no telling how many lives and businesses were saved that night thanks to Bobby.

And I'll tell you something else. Had President Kennedy lived - there never would have been a Vietnam. According to the history books, Vietnam is considered to have officially begun in '54, under Eisenhower, so there goes your little argument claiming 'JFK started Vietnam'. And by '63 he had already made the decision to pull America out of Vietnam. All of this information is available through the Freedom of Information Act.

In Oct. '63, JFK signed National Security Action Memorandum 263, which called for the first advisors to be home in Dec. '63 and for all advisors and troops to be out of Vietnam by the spring of '65. But those plans were left in bloody ruins on the streets of Dallas. They died with President Kennedy because - the very same day he was buried - Lying Lyndon signed National Security Action Memorandum 273, which completely reversed President Kennedy's orders - giving the military the war they so desperately wanted, a war that left millions of innocent people dead.

But people like you - all the facts in the world won't alter your thinking one bit. So you just keep playing with your tea bags, your confederate flags, and your worn out white hoods while you stare at pictures of Dubya, Perry, Palin, Bachmann or Beck and wank yourselves.

I've never been a follower of the Kennedy family. I must say, though, this woman looks 20 years older than her stated age. It's bizarre.
    • Cat  •  8 mths ago
Why does this family never stop suffering? I understand it was a very large family,so inevitably there would be many deaths, but to lose so many young members of the family, suddenly,my heart really goes out to the Kennedy family.
