KC mom admits she was drunk when her baby vanished

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The mother of a missing Kansas City baby said Monday that she was drunk when her daughter disappeared, may have blacked out and actually last saw the child hours before the time she originally told police she checked on her.

The revelations came hours before a New York attorney best known for defending Joran Van der Sloot, the Dutch man suspected in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba, said he had been hired to represent parents Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin.

The couple reported their 10-month-old daughter missing Oct. 4 after Irwin returned from working a night shift and found the front door unlocked, the house lights blazing, a window tampered with and the baby gone. Bradley and their two sons were asleep elsewhere in the home.

Bradley told police she last saw her daughter, Lisa Irwin, when she checked on her at 10:30 p.m. But Monday, she told NBC's "Today" show she actually last saw Lisa when she put her to bed at 6:40 p.m. She gave no explanation for the modified times.

Bradley told Fox News that she got drunk after she put her children to bed that night and may have blacked out. Asked how much she drank that night and whether it was more than five glasses of wine, she responded, "probably." She said she didn't have more than 10 glasses. Bradley said she frequently drinks heavily at home but only after her children are safely in bed. She also said she takes anxiety medication and had taken a dose that day.

Bradley told NBC that police accused her of killing Lisa and she believes she will be arrested. But she also insisted again that she had not harmed her daughter.

"No, no ... I don't think alcohol changes a person enough to do something like that," she said.

She became defiant when asked on Fox News how she would respond to people critical of her heavy drinking while caring for her children.

"She was sleeping. You know, I don't see the problem in me having my grown up time," Bradley said. "I take good care of my kids. I keep my house clean, do their laundry. I kiss their boo-boos. I fix them food. I'm involved in their school stuff. I mean, to me, there's nothing wrong doing what I want to do after dark."

FBI agents searched the family's house with dogs Monday and drained a nearby creek in their effort to find the child. Police have said they have no suspects or major leads even after multiple searches of the family's neighborhood, nearby wooded areas, a landfill and abandoned homes.

Bradley and Irwin held hands at a Monday afternoon news conference where defense attorney Joe Tacopina announced he was representing them. Tacopina said it was natural for police to focus on the parents.

"The police have to start with the mother and father, they absolutely have to," he said. "They're the first people they should look at. But don't come to a conclusion because there's no other answers."

Tacopina refused to say who was paying him, only saying he had been hired to counsel their parents through the investigation. He insisted they "have nothing to hide."

"I don't recall in recent history anyone under this umbrella of suspicion be so open and forthright, warts and all, regarding the events," Tacopina said.

Local news provides a bit more detail.
They claim that none of Bradley's 3 children have the same father.
The oldest boy is black, the middle child was fathered by her estranged husband and Lisa is supposedly fathered by Irwin.
Also, burned baby clothes were found in a dumpster. Not saying they are Lisa's, I'm just adding details.
They also speculate that one of her boys accidently killed Lisa and the 2 adults (I refuse to call them parents) are covering up for the kids.

Anyone find it odd that the 'aunt' refers to baby Lisa as 'it'.
      That alone ticked me off.

Interesting facts....thanks for sharing. Is her oldest child black or bi-racial? In the black community we claim all children mixed with black as one of us. But when we claimed the President Barack Obama as being black many whites got angry and wanted us to denounce him as bi-racial. So now that the sons in this case are under speculation of having killed their sister, you readily classify the oldest as black and disregarded the race of the other child. I wonder why?

You claim them? Like a lost animal? WTH?? What are YOU trying to say?? I think you are looking to say she was saying the black child di it when that was never said. Stop looking for something that is't there.
This family is hiding something. Come clean and take your punishment.

Saying that someone is bi-racial is not denouncing one race or the other. It is simply stating fact. Bi-racial=of two races.

I hope they find the baby, alive. A good ending would be nice for a change.

It would be nice but I bet you couldn't get good odds in Vegas on it.

Sadly, I agree Daniel. This baby is dead and mom did it.

No thanks, I'll do my betting on things that don't involve an infant being dead or alive.

so sad. I pray baby Lisa is found alive.

Really people....2 "thumbs down" to saying she hopes the baby is found alive? You two are sick individuals. SICK.

You have not talked to your 8-year old son about what he might have heard that night? You're either guilty or incredibly stupid.
      • Kelly 7 mths ago
Does that go the same for the police as well? Lol ! Why haven't they questioned him????
      • The Jenz 7 mths ago
I'm pretty sure they would need the parents consent to do so....

Chris - or she drinks a lot more than her husband or anyone else knows.

If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you say.

Besides, lying makes you look guilty, even if you're not.

Wonder who was keeping tabs of the other kids while she was getting wasted in the early evening. If she put the baby to bed at 6:40pm I would imagine she was probably drinking.... why would anyone lie even about the time you last saw the child in bed - if my child was truly missing I wouldn't embelish one fact - I hate to say it but I think she has harmed the baby.

that's good advice for our current gaggle of politicians

Too many things dont add up and other things add up a lot different than mommy and daddy are saying. Mommy says that she doesnt want the other kids involved in the investigation, maybe because she is afraid they will tell something she doesnt want to be known. Daddy seems to be scared and about to come unglued. I think Mommy and Daddy should have just admitted to what happened to the baby under Mommy's care and lived with the consiquences, rather than try to do the 'someone stole my baby' routine yet again.

The in-my-defense-I-was-drunk excuse never works for me either.
    • Cindy S  •  7 mths ago
She went to the store to buy wine and baby food. Where were the kids while she was at the store??
    • Laura  •  7 mths ago
I hate to be negative but this child has been missing for 13 days; she is most likely dead. In my little fantasy world I'd actually love to believe someone desperately wanting a child to love took her and will give her a better life than her drunk mother-but that's in fantasy world isn't it...
    • Jenny Smith  •  7 mths ago
This is so creepy. I don't care if it's a 6 y.o. or a 90 y.o. who heard "noises", a child is missing! WHAT DID YOU HEAR THAT NIGHT???
    • JohnS  •  7 mths ago
She doesn't want her other children to answer questions about what they might have heard because she wants to protect them? Ri-i-i-ght! Kids hear everything. Especially when you don't want them to. Bet those kids have an interesting story to tell.
    • LindaK  •  7 mths ago
The other children in the house are ALREADY aware that their baby sister is missing. Since they are already "involved" in what's going on, talking with them shouldn't stress them out anymore than they are already.
    • Daniel  •  7 mths ago
So she's changing her story plus she says her sons heard noises that night but she doesn't want to ask them what time they heard them because she doesn't want to put them through anything more. She isn't doing a very good job at making herself appear innocent.

"No, no ... I don't think alcohol changes a person enough to do something like that," she said.

Sadly, she has a lot to learn about alcohol. Cunning, baffling and insidious...

6 and 8 year olds don't go to bed at 6:40, so they would have been up well past the time that Mom passed out drunk. My parents were alcoholics, and I know when the folks pass out it means you and your siblings can have fun and no one will scream at you for it. Interview the kids, they know what happened.

This does give Vilaz-Mitchell and Nancy Grace something to talk about every night right?
    • Kimberly  •  7 mths ago
The thing that I find most suspicious, is not the mother being drunk (did not surprise me), but the fact that she does not want her sons to be questioned. Children that are 6 & 8 that are being carefully questions by an professional, can be very reliable witnesses. She does not want to put them through an investigation? What about putting them through the loss of their baby sister? That seems much more traumatic to me.

What this so called mother is forgetting is, ONCE YOU BECOME A PARENT YOU ARE A PARENT 24-7!!! What happens if her children get up during the middle of the night and need something? Her drunk #$%$ is going to be p#$%$ed out on the floor and unable to be a parent. Your kids didn't asked to be born. You brought them into this world through unprotected, one night stand sex, or because you planned them. Plain and simple. Once you are a parent you are a parent 24-7! The part of you getting sauced off your #$%$ is over in your life unless you make proper arrangements. Get with the program people. Our children need our help to get through this life, so please, be there for them and be a responsilbe parent for the love of all that is holy!!!!
    • RheaS  •  7 mths ago
This woman seems deep in denial about her "me time." She's an alcoholic. Not that it means she killed her daughter or hurt her, but it definitely impaired her judgment to the point where she was unable to protect her. And as for thinking the kids will never notice that Mom's drinking after they go to bed, guess again. Kids are savvier than you realize, lady.

I'm sure she's not telling the truth.
