Kearney man shot at victim then officers in standoff: court docs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kearney man accused of terrorizing a domestic violence victim shot her up with methamphetamine, fired gunshots at her, used a hammer to try and break into a room where she was hiding before firing more shots a Clay County tactical team during a standoff, according to investigators and court papers.

Scott Blau, 34, is accused of numerous felonies related to the domestic violence assault turned standoff late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Clay County prosecutors charged him with assault and domestic assault, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and shooting a firearm from a building.

Kearney police officers initially responded to a call at 9 p.m. Tuesday to a home at Jesse and Ford streets, near the intersection of Interstate 35 and 33 Highway.

Officers found the victim who said she and Blau were arguing before she walked away. She said she soon realized he was following her before he pointed a handgun at her and pulled the trigger. The bullet missed her and hit a door, sending her into hiding in another room.

She told officers he started pounding the sheet rock next to the door with a hammer for several minutes before stopping. About an hour later, she said she escaped through a back door and heard another shot fired as she ran through the backyard.

She spoke with officers, who saw numerous injuries on her arms, torso and wrists. She told investigators the wrist injuries happened when he stuck her with a syringe she thought may have contained meth.

Based on her interview and knowing Blau was still in the house and armed, officers called in the Clay County Special Tactics and Response (STAR) team.

They tried to order him out of the house using a loudspeaker, and used gases to try and force him out of the home. Those efforts didn’t initially work, and court papers say they could hear him moving furniture in attempt to barricade himself, and heard more gunshots, at least one of them flying past officers.

The STAR team got a search warrant after 2 a.m., and decided to break through the front door. Court documents say Blau came out of an open garage with a makeshift shield and walked toward them, leading deputies to fire bean bag rounds at him.

Blau was subdued and taken to a hospital for evaluation, and then jail for questioning.

Back at the scene, investigators found a stolen .9 mm gun in the house, and discovered two neighboring homes were damaged by gunfire.

During his interview with investigators, court documents say Blau told them he and the victim had been fighting, and he did inject the victim with meth because he didn’t want her to hurt herself by injecting herself.

He also admitted to firing a gun at the victim because she said “horrible and hurtful things” to him. He said the other times he fired the gun was because he was “freaking out.” Blau said he’s been experiencing issues seeing things, but nobody believes him.

Blau made his first court appearance Thursday and pleaded not guilty. He’s held on a $500,000 bond, and has a bond reduction hearing on May 16. Online records don’t list an attorney for him, and show that the court advised him to apply for public defender.
