Kids From Poorer Families Drink Too Much Juice: Poll

FRIDAY, Feb. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Many young children from low-income families drink too much juice, new research shows.

To fight childhood obesity and tooth decay, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children aged 6 and under consume only one serving of juice -- even 100 percent fruit juice -- each day. In the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, however, it was found that about 50 percent of kids in low-income families drink twice that amount.

The poll asked parents of all income levels how much juice their children consumed each day. Overall, 35 percent of parents reported their children between the ages of 1 and 5 years old drank two or more cups of juice on any given day.

Nearly half of the parents with household incomes less than $30,000 per year said their children drank two or more cups of juice daily. In contrast, just 23 percent of parents with household incomes of $100,000 or more reported their children drank that much juice.

"Both childhood obesity and early dental problems are more prevalent in lower-income children, so the children we're most worried about in terms of these conditions are also those who are drinking the most juice," Sarah Clark, associate director of the Child Health Evaluation and Research Unit at the University of Michigan and associate director of the National Poll on Children's Health, said in a university news release. "For many obese children, sugary beverages make up a large proportion of their daily energy intake."

The study authors pointed out that parents may encourage their children to drink juice so they consume the recommended amount of fruit each day.

"Parents who give their child juice as a healthy alternative may actually be feeding them nearly as much sugar as soda," Clark said. "Parents may think juice is an easy way for their child to get a serving of fruit, but it's often difficult to pick out 100 percent fruit juice amid the sugar-sweetened juice drinks."

The findings also revealed that 35 percent of low-income parents said their doctor recommended juice.

"This is an important message for health care providers as well as parents," Clark said. "Doctors need to be very specific in letting parents know that whole fruit is the best way to have a child get recommended servings of fruit, and that fruit juice should be limited to no more than one serving per day for kids 6 years and younger."

Duh. If you are reading the labels on juice you will know that one cup of juice can have over 100+ calories. Add two to four glasses a day and you are drinking a lot of your calories for the day. I grew up drinking orange juice and now I probably buy a thing of orange juice once in a blue moon.

I blame WIC (Women, Infant, Children) for this. They give gallons of free juice per family in this program.

thats what i was going to say, they give juice and you can't exchange it for something healthier, and you al;so have to take everything on the voucher, they won't accept it otherwise.

WIC does give juice, but it is only 100% juice, and only a small amount, considering.

        Water. Like they should.

What should they drink? Diet coke? It's always something. If everybody stopped eating candy and fast food and just ate fresh foods, an article would pop up about how we need to eat more fast food and that fresh foods are killing us. Marketing sucks.

When my children were that age I guess we would have been considered low income, and they drank alot of juice. It was NOT cheap by any means. Not sure why "poor" people are being singled out for this. I was also blessed with children that eat fruits/veggies. They were also blessed with being tall and thin. (they drank WHOLE milk till they were 13, with the OK from the dr)

it's not actually juice, recent studies have shown these low income families also consider Kool-Aid and Grape Soda as juice

Poor quality juice is cheaper than fresh fruit, it comes in convenient individual serving cartons, kids will drink it as opposed to "bad" tasting water, families in some large cities only access to "groceries" is the local convenience or drug store - no fresh fruit.

Go somewhere and buy fruit. Apples, oranges, pears, and others can last a month without going bad. Frozen concentrated orange and grape juice is cheap and good in hot weather. Most anyone can afford them, you need not buy a truckload. I only shop once a month.

Where do you live Mike? Here in Austin that is a possibility, try some of the major US cities like DC, nothing within walking or even convenient bus distance that is affordable.

Interestingly nothing said about Consumer Reports recent study that found arsenic levels in juice above federal safe levels for water.

i do agree with this article somewhat because my ex-husband came from a low income family where all they had was sweets and fattening foods. if it was not for me, my daugther would not like fruits at all. this article is about what children have at home only, leaving out lunch at school. we do not know what they eat in school. there is juice/milk at school as well as pizza. a child's lunch is not limited in school to what they can have or how much. they also trade with their friends for things they want. my daughter eats her fruits/vegetables at home and at school. she has breakfast, lunch and snack at school. easier to limit at home, but not outside of home.

Yeah, because lemon/lime soda is so much better for their teeth than juice, and cola drinks are better for their bones.

Juice is not the problem - stupidity is. Including the author of this moronic article. Claiming that drinking 2 glasses of "juice" a day causes obsesity is the silliest thing I've heard. Obsesity would impliy eating garbage with empty calories all day long on top of that - not that fruit juice is bad - stupidity is not reading the label and feeding on junk food. And publishing such a thoughtless in a column which obviously had no editor.

God what a stupid waste of time. What do rich kids drink too much of then? Some people in the world drink dirty water and had bugs for dinner too. What about it!

I give 100% fruit juice to my grandson and that's more expensive but he's worth it.

Do not worry about bananas, most l\liggers will not eat them. They say something about Cheetah or gorillas or something.

    • MOM D  •  3 mths ago
When I was growing up, my mother gave us "drink." Unlike grape juice, grape "drink" doesn't necessarily have actual juice in it, just 30lbs of sugar

Our local grocery store has started a new program where there is a number for each product they sell that estimates the nutritional value (probably nutrition per calorie). I haven't seen it yet, but my brother said juices ranked very low, about like sugar pop, except for citrus juice, and just about all the fresh and frozen produce scored near 100. I wish I remembered the name of the new program - the shelf tags are RIGHT THERE next to the price. Should save time reading labels, very generally speaking. Obviously, many concerns are encapsulated into one number, and maybe food manufacturers will find ways to game the system.

Ok, lets examine this analytically. People who are "poor" get access to WIC, WIC goves you gallons of juice for free. soooo stop giving juice away with the WIC program. Problem solved!

First thing in the morning, I make my kids drink water. The OJ is meted out like gold! Forthat sweet thrill for after school snack, I love the " Roaring Waters" brand because it is lightly flavored water for 30 calories instead of the 100 and 150 calorie juice and soda. Also, for small children, make a serving of water LOOK important - I used to put it in a undersized coffee mug that has a Disney character on it, so they can have a cup like Mommy or Daddy to drink at the table. We used to have a game where after each sip, we'd say " Ahhhhh!" That got old REAL fast, but I think it set a habit - they now at 6 years prefer a half liter water to quench thirst. Of course it also helps when you simply limit what is there in the fridge.
