Kim Dotcom's Great Data Massacre
Welp, here's hoping you didn't have anything important stored on Megaupload's mostly dormant servers. Megaupload owner and maniacal super villain Kim Dotcom says a huge amount of their servers have been wiped in a "data massacre" for the ages.

Kim Dotcom woke up to some very bad news Wednesday morning:

Dotcom says "petabytes" of files (one petabyte is equal to 1,000 terabytes) have been deleted. "This is the largest data massacre in the history of the Internet caused by the U.S. government, the Department of Justice & Leaseweb," Dotcom claims. Apparently the servers were actually wiped on February 1 but Leaseweb didn't mention anything until today. Dotcom says they "repeatedly asked" Leaseweb not to delete the servers and even asked the Justice Department to unfreeze their assets so they could buy the servers. The DOJ refused, the servers were never purchased, and now they're gone. Dotcom is "in tears."

Dotcom's dramatics aren't all that surprising. He's still fighting extradition to the U.S. for copyright infringement, money laundering and racketeering charges related to his original file-sharing website. Dotcom says the servers housed evidence that would have helped in the case. But, well, it's all gone. This wasn't nearly as dramatic as that insane police raid video of his compound in New Zealand, though. Which was, it should be mentioned, for unrelated charges. The former hacker has a colorful legal history.
