Kim Kardashian is arguably the queen of reality television, so why not let her hang on the lace trains of commoners turned blue bloods Kate Middleton and Charlene Wittstock, and fashion royalty Kate Moss? Actually, given her enormous and rather baffling popularity, she could very well eclipse the media coverage given to Monaco's royal wedding, runaway bride drama and all.
I never really understood the relevance of the Kardashians. And while I am a sucker for reality television, I never got into the whole Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloe and Lamar, Kim and Kourtney Take New York, Miami and whatever other city they bring their drama, neuroses and self-promotion too. I admit, she is stunning, but what else does you bring to the table?
And now this whole spectacle of a wedding, an event so grand (reportedly costing north of $10 million but earning the bride a reported 18 million because of television exclusives) that it rivals the other high profile weddings of 2011. Expect celebrity weeklies to have all sorts of Kardashian wedding headlines on their covers for weeks to come and the Twitter universe to be filling up the 140-character field with ad nauseum details, gossips, congratulatory wishes and even punchlines regarding this much hyped wedding.
But E, the home of the Kardashian family cat fights, is not showing their coverage of the wedding until October 8 and 9 in a two-part special. This is rather unconventional in the age of instant media gratification, paparazzi, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Storify and other forms of social media. Would there still be interest in this American "royal wedding" a month or so after it happened? Wouldn't all the details and photographs have leaked by then? Who would tuned in? Would this whirlwind of a romance even last until October 8? Given the way Hollywood marriages unravel almost as soon as the couples come back from their honeymoons (cue Renee Zellweger) and that this is Kim's second marriage, the question begged to be asked.
In fact, I found the black and white dress code rather suspect. In most Asian cultures, it is actually bad luck to wear black to a wedding because it is considered as some sort of sartorial disguise for misfortune and even even death. So to wear black to someone's wedding is kind of like giving the bride and groom the finger while you're enjoying their wedding cake. But then again, Kim is not Asian, so why would she even care about customs that are far removed from her own.
What about the rule that female guests should never slip into a dress in any shade of white to a wedding? Whatever happened to the sorority code of never upstaging the bride? Jill Zarin gave Alex McCord grief for wearing an ivory dress at a wedding they both attended in the Hamptons in one of the earlier episodes of the recently concluded Real Housewives of New York. I suppose that since it is her wedding, you couldn't fault Kim for making some dramatic pronouncement that's bound to get column inches on print and the world wide web. You've got to hand it to her for never ceasing to find opportunities to fan publicity her way. And besides, who could possibly one-up the beautiful and curvaceous Kim? And if someone dared to, she could just easily reach for her wedding cake and slap frosting into their faces as Kim once did to her mother, who in a brilliant twist has the same name as her new husband.
