Knox supporters cheer appeals court's decision

SEATTLE (AP) — Once it was clear that Amanda Knox's Italian murder conviction was overturned, her supporters in Seattle burst into cheers, threw their hands in the air and began to cry in joy.

"She's free," Tom Rochelle repeated as the translation of the Italian judge's words came across TV Monday.

Surrounded by news cameras, the dozen or so supporters began hugging each other at a downtown hotel suite. The celebration marked four years of uncertainty for friends and supporters of Knox's family.

In its ruling, the Italian appeals court also cleared Knox's co-defendant, Raffaele Sollecito, of murder in Meredith Kercher's death. Kercher, 21, shared an apartment with Knox when they were both students in Perugia. She was stabbed to death in her bedroom.

Knox and Sollecito, her former boyfriend from Italy, were convicted of murdering Kercher in 2009. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. Also convicted in separate proceedings was Rudy Hermann Guede, a drifter and native of the Ivory Coast.

Knox and Sollecito denied wrongdoing and the appeals court ultimately agreed.

Supporters also expressed sympathy for the Kercher family.

"This is primarily a sad occasion," said Tom Wright, one of the main organizers of the Friends of Amanda group, after the verdict. "They lost their daughter. We'll keep them in our prayers."

Knox grew up in Seattle, attending a private Jesuit high school before going to the University of Washington.

Friends of Amanda formed shortly after Knox was arrested for murder in 2007. With Italy nine hours ahead of Seattle, the group rented a suite and waited through the night for the court's ruling.

Friends of Amanda is made up of parents of her high school classmates, her friends from college and high school, and sympathizers from around the country. Some never met the young Seattle woman, including Rochelle, who joined the group two years ago after learning about Knox in the news.

From trips to Italy to sending Knox books, the group has been a pillar of support for the family.

Kellanne Henry is friends with Edda Mellas, Knox's mother, and has visited the family in Italy.

"It's the first night in four years that (Edda) is going to know her daughter is safe," said Henry, holding crumpled tissues in her hand. "That was a really overwhelming thought for me."

Some of the people gathered for Knox wore T-shirts that said "Free Amanda and Raffaele." Photographs of Knox, Sollecito and Kercher, illuminated by candles, were set up in the suite.

"It's unreal," John Lange, Knox's former teacher, kept repeating after the verdict was read.

Lange remembers Knox as the modest drama student who played an orphan in the high school's production of "Annie."

"There's the person you know and there's the widely varying depictions of her character largely wrong, and upsetting to those of us who know her," Lange said earlier in the day.

Wright spent the last minutes leading to the verdict writing a speech, pending a verdict. When asked, he said his words didn't anticipate that the conviction would not be overturned.

"It was inconceivable for me that she wasn't coming home," Wright said.

    What do you think?

Do you agree with Knox's acquittal?

No, she's guilty Yes, she's innocent

Good post Chuck. You are right....
But so are you, Joe Blow. I dunno if you were supporting OJ or being facetious, but it is a shame on those occasions that are an obvious travesty of justice.

My heart goes out to Meredith's family because on some level, I DO believe the REAL victim has been forgotten (Meredith.) If Amanda did do it, she will face her judgement one day...and if she didn't, then I hope she can find peace and move on and be happy in her life someday!

They are all real victims just to crimes that arent the same... one murder, the other false imprisonment... Just because Meredith died doesnt mean you put as many people as possible behind bars... when they may well have not commited a crime... you all need to realize that a jury faced with all the facts... not just the media roundtable released her.

I hope everyone will join me in boycotting any book deal, movie deal, and TV appearance by Amanda Knox. If she is on a magazine cover, bury the covers with other magazines at all stores. She will become a rich celebrity now and the other girl is still dead.

Pookie Sue; the evidence is overwhelming that Amanda Knox did not kill Meridith. Amanda know is alsmost as much a victim as Meredith. I hooe Amanda become mega welthy for having to endure this Italian style travesty of Justice .

Reducing Rudy Guede's sentence from 30 years to 16 years makes NO sense if he's the killer. Just sayin'
      • Guess Who 7 mths ago
After this Rudy Guede will talk. Oh will he ever. Stay tuned.
      • Lauren 7 mths ago
They upheld his conviction but reduced the sentence on his first appeal because he expressed contrition and apologized to the Kercher family. The final appeal to the supreme court maintained that, so his case is over.

He already has "talked" he said that Amanda and her BF were not there that night.

Will7: What if you're a murderer that nobody knows about? You should be executed just to make sure that the rest of us are safe.

an appeals court never overturns a conviction unless there is GROSS misconduct from a prosecutor....this is a story about a true travesty of justice, and this prosecutor should be in jail, and all his other cases should be re-examined........
      • TEDDY BEAR-HUGGER 7 mths ago
Amen to that!!!! You are soooo right!
      • The Wise Oracle 7 mths ago
        YES I AM........ALWAYS WILL.......
      • Glimmerman 7 mths ago
"...this prosecutor should be in jail, and all his other cases should be re-examined..."

YES, absolutely. Prosecutors who knowingly bring about a false conviction ought serve the same sentence, including death. Then they might be more diligent about true justice and not just about political belt notches...
    • Phil  •  7 mths ago
If you don't like the verdict blame the prosecutor and the police: their bad habit of doing everything wrong was ultimately responsible for the release of Knox.

Pretty sure it was Rudy Hermann Guede they found DNA all over the room and in Meredith Kercher, on top of that he fled Italy the next day and was finally found in Germany by interpol. Guilty much?

Although I didn't follow the case closely, the crime was exceedingly brutal and of the type typically committed by a sociopath, and not by an apparently normal and pedestrian young middle class woman from a loving family. Good to see that justice was done.

Yahoo really should require people to prove they're age 18+ before allowing them to post. I'm tired of these teenagers who think they're clever by posting offensive comments.

Manuela Comodi, the prosecutor arse who condemned this woman and her boyfriend, has spent ‎time in jail for numerous counts of destroying evidence, hiding evidence all in the name of ‎getting a conviction. After arresting Knox the murderer was caught but they arse didn't want to ‎lose face and went ahead and held a kangaroo court.‎

wait...so she was tried, convicted and won an appeal all in the Italian court system...why do I get the feeling somehow Americans are going to get the backlash despite it being Italy's court system?
    • twilightzone  •  7 mths ago
She was never involved in the murder,it was the drifter from the african satan worshipping clan, why else did he flee the country the night of the murder.Italian prosecutor was making a mochary of the U.S by indicting this girl.
