Komen fundraiser calls for Brinker’s resignation

    Well, that didn’t take long…

A major Susan G. Komen for the Cure donor has called for the breast cancer foundation to “clean house” including Komen founder and chief executive Nancy Brinker.

In a letter to friends and family, published by The UK Guardian Wednesday, Eve Ellis, who spent six years on Komen NYC’s Board and raised over $250,000 for the group, explained that she does not believe Brinker’s claims that the decision to cut grants to Planned Parenthood were not politically motivated.

Ellis wrote, in the letter sent Monday, that in order to restore her trust Komen must replace the Board, Brinker must resign, and Karen Handel, the former senior vice president for public policy must be terminated (Handel resigned Tuesday).

“A clean house would enable Komen to carry on its much-needed, admirable work without the baggage of being the organization that had actually deliberated on and subsequently made the heartless decision to defund Planned Parenthood and to endanger the heath of thousands of women,” she wrote. “When we have a clean house, we should get answers to how this happened, and a clear refocus that Komen stands for all women’s health.”

According to Ellis, Brinker cannot be trusted and that politics were definitely at play in the decision to pull funding — not just because Handel, the supposed force behind the decision — but also because of Brinker’s past ties to the Bush administration and the fact that Brinker told affiliates on Saturday that former Bush White House Press secretary Ari Fleischer would be helping Komen with “crisis communications.”

“Nancy Brinker was a George W. Bush Ambassador appointee and is a Bush family friend. Is it just coincidence that the head of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, is the daughter of that feisty progressive nemesis of the Bush family, the late Governor of Texas, Ann Richards?” she wrote.

Ellis added that while the reversal of the decision to defund Planned Parenthood was “a step in the right direction” more needs to be done and that a “clean house” is the way to restore trust.

Brinker founded Komen in 1982. Cecile Richards has been with Planned Parenthood since 2006.

      Think before you Pink!
Big companies and Breast Cancer Awareness organizations are reaping lots of money but often don't have much to show for it.
      Examples:
      - 3M spent $500K in marketing their Pink-Post-It notes only to give $300K to Komen.
      - Cosmetic companies often use parabens (linked to breast cancer) in their products but have lucrative tie-ins with Komen to put pink ribbons on their products.
      - Companies often cap their donations to Komen, but this isn't known to consumers who buy the companies' products with the intent that a portion of their purchase goes towards breast cancer awareness.

Finally, do we need to keep spending on awareness? Shouldn't we start spending on prevention, research, and treatment? These days "awareness" sounds a lot more like "marketing" to me...

I just checked, Komen allocated 15% of donations for cancer research in 2011. Not exactly "racing" for the cure, is it? I also read that they spend enormous amounts of money suing local charities for using the words 'race' and "cure," sometimes putting them out of business. They're not the good guys.

wow, someone on yahoo who did some research and had a reasonable and good comment to make.

i wish i could save your post just for its rarity.

you are right, komen has spent A LOT of time and money keeping "competition" at bay. i have heard horror stories of women wanting to start foundations in their own names or those of family, only to have komen suing them or usurping them. i stopped even thinking of "buying pink" years ago when i heard what they really do.

the standard should always be, "the larger they are, the more corrupt they will be." it seems to hold true in the US a lot. they are too big for their britches.

Don't know what your talking about since their financials haven't been made available that I can find. Here are the stats for 2010.... 12% Admin, 8% Fundraising, 7% Treatment, 15% Screening, 24% Research, 34% Education. Furthermore, I believe a charity(ANY CHARITY)has a right to point their money in any direction they want. If they disclose their spending habits(which they have to)then it's up to the individual contributor to decide from there. There's no need for whining, just give to someone else. The problem here is apparent. This entire debacle is all due to the fact that The Komen Foundation DARED to go against Planned Parenthood. That's all there is to it. Anything else is a complete falsehood. I look at it this way.... I hope the Komen foundation get's sick of all this crap and dissolve's itself and says we are done helping others. It's not worth the hassle.

Bob C the SGK was founded to find a cure for breast cancer and you should do a little better research and you might see Ben is a little closer to the truth than you are. Brinker makes almost a half million dollars a year plus benefits and this Handel person was paid almost a quarter million dollars plus a year and they have an enormous building for their offices. Cancer cure and research should be about 95% of the money donated. With all the publicity they are getting about where the

Well, those girls sure opened up a hornets' nest! They can't make it go away, either. Of course their Planned Parenthood move was political! How could it not be? Because of all that, they've exposed the probability that the Komen organization is spending money on something besides looking for a cancer cure. Sorry, girls! That's naughty! It's going to cost you donors, and it probably should.

More over, I think she needs to explain her 400,000$ plus salary. I don't believe for a second that hard working Americans would give a dime to a charity that pays anyone in its ranks that much money. She has made millions off of her sisters death. It is just grotesque.

Nothing is going to save this brand. Between the PP disaster and all the other stuff that come out since, no one will trust them with their donations. I'm thankful for the PP disaster because they have been running a scam on us for a long time. Their foot soldiers care too much about a cure to ever trust them again.
      • judyrae41 3 mths ago
It might help if Karen Brinker didn't continually talk DOWN to people. Her patronizing attitude is beyond ridiculous, as is her apparent refusal to understand that it is average Americans who are up in arms about this. She can kiss all the conservative butts she wants, but without the average Americans who walk & run, who buy or used to buy the pink merchandise, her organization is NOTHING.
    • ker  •  3 mths ago
i've heard for YEARS that komen threatens and overtakes other start-up foundations to keep the competition away. ever since i started hearing stories about how they operate many years ago, i decided my donation dollars can go to a lot of other organizations, including ones that cover the cancers my family has died from. sometimes it's just personal.

Throw Brinker out !!! She makes how much a year, $500,000.00 a year. That's how she can afford all the plastic surgery.

While I gave you a thumbs up for the first part of your statement, I am not in agreement with the second part.

Feeding only yourself is not we how humans are supposed to treat one another. No matter what your circumstances, there is always 1 person off less fortunate and anothr human being in need. It could be you one day.. Helping is part of your life here on earth.

That is how I see it.....Last Christmas, after I was laid off and no income, no unemployment yet, I was walking towards Walmart and came across the Salvation Army folks. And yes, of my $ 20, I gave them $ 10. It made me feel very good knowing that I could do with less by sharing what I had. That is what people all over the world do, share what they can.

The Salvation Army are the only folks I give to since theRed Cross scandal years ago....
      • Sunset 3 mths ago
Laura, there's a misunderstanding to the second part of my statement.I meant that when I give direct to someone in need,I know where it went. From my hand to someone else's mouth.Sorry about misleading you!
    • RAZOR  •  3 mths ago
Our company stopped giving the moment that we found out that Brinker's annual salary was 400k. That is just plain wrong within an organization like this.
      • JJMurray 3 mths ago
The President of Planned Parenthood gets $440K as well, so you cut off giving anything to them too right?

Kudos for Eve Ellis for stating the truth.
    • Slug Munchies  •  3 mths ago
Feel sorry for that big fundraiser, Eve Ellis. She raised over $250,000 in 6 years for Komen...

I wonder how she feels, knowing that Brinker (Komen CEO) pays herself $470,000/year?

Like I said regarding an earlier story on all this, if people really want to work toward a cure for this or any other disease, DO NOT donate to these large foundations!!! How much of what you donate do you think really goes toward research? Foundations have staff to pay, advertising to buy, events to plan and carry through on and, in this case, pink ribbons and products with pink ribbons on them to produce. Yes, this does raise awareness but it does little, if any, to actually work toward a cure. I've been aware of breast cancer for a long, long time and my awareness didn't come from a pink ribbon or a foundation. It came from my family, my friends and my doctor, NOT from Komen! If you really want to donate to find a cure, donate directly to research labs, hospitals and individuals who are actually trying to do something to find a cure, not spending their time holding board meetings, planning events, shelling out of advertising and playing politics!
    • D  •  3 mths ago
just defund Komen and start a new foundation which better reflects your values...
    • lucille  •  Miami, Florida  •  3 mths ago
I bet if susan was still alive her sister would have spent more on research and less on political crap and pink fluff. There is no urgency in her charity to find a cure, you know the original purpose
    • Kristin  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  3 mths ago
while i think Ellis probably sympathizes with the PP side of the debate, i think her larger point is valid. While i don't necessarily think Komen's original aim in giving $$$ to PP was to voice support for abortions, it's decision to defund PP was clearly a political move to voice condemnation of the practice. And whatever side of the debate you are on, I do think that we all can agree (can we?) that a group whose mission is to raise funds for cancer research, should not be weighing in on a political question not associated with its stated mission and reason for being. While I am firmly on the pro-Choice side of the debate, I think it would also be inappropriate for Komen to give $$ specifically as a way of supporting abortions. Whatever side of the debate you are on, I think it should be pretty clear that it is completely inappropriate for a charity such as Komen to use its clout and resources to weigh in on a political issue outside of its sphere (and I know there are some who claim that abortions lead to higher incidents of breast cancer, but there is not agreement in the field whether the link is substantial -- mostly because those running the studies tend to favor one side or the other and try to have their results comport to their views... so in this instance, even the justification of abortions cause cancer would strike as blatantly political). Komen should stick to cancer, and leave abortion and politics to the politicians. although i think as of now the group is broken. It has lost the respect and trust of people on both sides of the issue, and the scandal has brought to light certain other unsavory practices that the charity engages in (like, suing other, often small and local non-profits, who use pink or the word "cure" in their title). I think that the org really does need to clean house, otherwise Komen in kaput
    • JohnG  •  3 mths ago
They're more a business than a charity. They're primarily focused on staff, salaries, and bonuses. All they need is a palatial headquarters in Washington and they can rival the Red Cross.
    • Joe  •  3 mths ago
Here I thought Susan Komen foundation was looking for a cure for breast cancer. Something I entirely support. Why not just stick to what you state you are doing and stay out of other arenas. jmho
    • MrKnowitall  •  Tucson, Arizona  •  3 mths ago
Interesting, it seems Komen has found a way to alienate both side of the abortion debate. #$%$ of the left by pulling their support of Planned Parenthood, and in the process revealed that they WERE supporting PP thereby #$%$ off the right. I LOVE IT!
