Korea Box Office: ‘Veteran’ Achieves Hit Status as Local Films Extend Domination

CJ Entertainment’s “Veteran” topped the Korean box office for the fourth consecutive weekend. Local films took the top five chart places.

Its $7.36 million from 1.08 million admissions took it past the 10 million admissions landmark, the mark of a major hit. It is the third to do so this year after “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Assassination” are the other two. After four weeks on release “Veteran” has grossed $71.76 million and sold 10.81 million tickets.

High concept fantasy romance, “The Beauty Inside” remained in second place, with a week-on-week drop of 17%, the high-concept fantasy romance. Released by NEW, it earned $2.75 million and has made $9.23 million since Aug 20.

Showbox’s “Assassination” remained unchanged in third place. It was down 29%, adding $2.32 million for a total of $80.0 million from 12.2 million admissions.

Local new release “Untouchable Lawman” debuted in fourth place. The action comedy earned $1.68 million over its opening four days.

Korean fantasy comedy “Wonderful Nightmare” dropped only 3% and climbed one place to fifth spot. It has made $5.39 million after three weeks on release.

Top newcomer was “American Ultra” debuting in sixth-place with $854,000 in four days. French music drama “The Belier Family” landed in ninth, earning $367,000.
