Kosovo president will support EU tribunal
PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Kosovo's president has signaled her government will actively support European Union efforts to create an international tribunal to try former rebels suspected of war crimes.
Atifete Jahjaga said Friday she will seek approval from the country's 120-seat parliament next week. The move is important because it marks the first time that Kosovo's leadership has indicated whether it would support the controversial plan.
Failing to participate could have greatly complicated efforts to bring suspects to justice, as authorities could have blocked the handover of evidence or stall extraditions.
Kosovo has largely failed to hold ethnic Albanian rebels to account for crimes committed during the 1998-1999 war, in part because the victors were unwilling to charge the fighters who brought the nation independence — even those who might have acted improperly.
