Kraft Foods: Rainbow OREO a ‘reflection of our values’
Kraft Foods set off a firestorm after posting a gay pride rainbow-filled OREO cookie on its Facebook page Monday with the caption “Proudly support love!”
By Tuesday afternoon over 170,000 Facebook users had “liked” the page and the post was inundated with thousands of pro- and anti-rainbow cookie statements.
Kraft spokesman Basil T. Maglaris told The Daily Caller that the rainbow cookie is not planned for sale, but meant as part of the snack’s 100th birthday celebration, “creating online content every day reflecting current events in a fun way using images of OREO cookies and milk.”
“In recognition of Pride Month, OREO created an ad depicting the Rainbow flag with different colors of OREO crème,” Maglaris said in an email to TheDC. “We are excited to illustrate what is making history today in a fun and playful way. You can follow OREO on Facebook to see the newest image each day.”
According to Maglaris, the amount of traction and “buzz” the image has received is proof of OREO’s relevancy after a century.
“As a company, Kraft Foods has a proud history of celebrating diversity and inclusiveness. We feel the OREO ad is a fun reflection of our values,” Maglaris added.
While the image received many positive comments and cheers — such as John Moose Williamson’s “Good for you, Oreo. People are gonna boycott you and stuff now, but I’ll just buy more oreos” — there were many dissenters.
“Supporting all forms of love? So what if I would like to marry my dog? Is that next?” inquired Facebook user John Norton.
“Another reason to avoid this poison,” sniped user Kristin Small.
Kraft’s image follows in the footsteps of other companies that have come out in support of gay pride.
On Tuesday the National Organization for Marriage announced a boycott of General Mills products due to the company’s recent announcement of support for same-sex marriage.
