Krauthammer: Leak indicates Israeli attack on Iran ‘certain’

Last week in his Washington Post column, David Ignatius wrote that Israel was preparing to attack Iran to prevent it from being able to build a nuclear bomb.

According to his Post opinion page colleague Charles Krauthammer, based on the source behind Ignatius’ claim it is likely an attack will occur.

On this weekend’s broadcast of “Inside Washington,” Krauthammer explained his thought process.

“I think it’s fairly certain the Israelis are going to attack or you would not have had this leak, deliberately coming this week from secretary of Defense through David Ignatius of The [Washington] Post saying that he thinks there is a high likelihood Israel is going to attack, and then he went ahead and specified when. He said three months, April, May or June. And you don’t say that unless there is obviously indications from the Israelis that they are going to do this even if they get and they are getting a signal from the United States not to do it.”

Krauthammer doubted Israel was factoring what impact a strike against Iran might have on upcoming U.S. presidential election.

“No, I think the calculation is what Ignatius reported as Panetta said: The Israelis think that the problem is that Iran is about to enter the zone of immunity. And that means the trigger is not the assumption that Iran now has the know-how to make a bomb. That is later down the road. What comes earlier is when Iran has put enough uranium in completely untouchable, protected sites, like the mountain outside of Qom where you cannot touch it, meaning that at that point, Iran has the wherewithal, the facilities, the material that it can build a bomb unmolested, and then it can never be attacked again. If Israel thinks it is approaching the point of immunity, it will attack.”

Krauthammer reminded viewers that the real threat of escalation would be if the rogue state attempted to block the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Iranian oil is already being cut off,” “The Europeans are not importing it … The Saudis have pledged [because the Saudis are determined to see the Iranian nuclear program wiped out -- they are very upset about this] a replacement for any Iranian oil. So if it’s just Iranian oil, it will have no effect.’

“Question is will they close the Strait of Hormuz, which will shut off everybody’s oil, which as Evan [Thomas] indicates is suicidal if you are the Islamic Republic.’

“The other question is will they attack the United States base in Bahrain, which is also suicidal, cause if you kill a single American, you’re going to bring America into the war and Europe into the war: The Europeans will join as well. So it will be an all out war.’

“I think Evan is right. The rational Iranian response will be to attack Israel and nobody else.”

Ok. Let Israel and Iran go to war. Just leave me out of it and let our soldiers stay home with their families.

OK weakling, liberal, POS. #$%$..too many kids growing up without fathers.
      • J D 3 mths ago
Kelly, I can think of better things to do with my tax money than fight other country's wars. That is not an Israeli or Iranian flag flying outside of my house. It's an American flag, and this American wants the streets repaved.

Israel has a human shield... all those West Bank Palestinians. How can Iran hope to attack Israel and not kill scores of Muslim Arab Palestinians? Or maybe Iran will just kill them, along with Israelis and blame Israel? Watch out if you are a Palestinian... You are just going to be collateral damage.

People who say Iran will not attack anybody forgot they were involved in a war with Iraq. The mullahs control that country and are nuts. Just like Hitler was nutszoid.
    • Jack Mehoff  •  3 mths ago
Let's see. Bibi Netanyahu orders an attack on Iran mere months before a U.S. presidential election. Oh, but he's not "factoring in" what effect this will have. (Yeah, and if you believe that, I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell you !)

Of course they're "factoring" it in. For those of you who are rather slow, the attack, if it comes, will be timed to inflict maximum damage, via a massive spike in oil prices, 1) on a recovering U.S. economy, and, therfore, 2) on President Obama's reelection chances! So it's a "win-win" for the GOP, it's oil company buddies, and also for the hardliners in Jerusalem who've been pushing so long for this new Middle East conflagration! Beautiful !!

Hopefully the Iranian people will have a chance to make a regime change once the smoke clears, lets just hope that smoke isn't radioactive!

If Israel actually decides to attack Iran no one will really know until after the fact. The Israelis are not in the habit of empty sabre-rattling, nor announcing a strike ahead of time. They are too smart for that and too good at defending themselves to give it all away on a silver platter.
      • Richard Longley 3 mths ago
Really? It seems like they've been rattling their sabres quite a bit lately, in a transparent attempt to convince their bankrupt sponsors to do the dirty work for them.
      • csp 3 mths ago
@Richard Langley ...you're full of it. It is Israel that will be doing Our dirty work. Truth is they won't have to go it alone.
      • usjustice101 3 mths ago
@Richard Longley: Did it ever occur -- in that peasized brain of yours -- that Israel may have intel and info that the rest of the world doesn't have? Or that, having had to defend itself from murderous arab lunatics, it understands the geopolitics of the region better than anyone else? Did it ever occur to you Israel is actually sounding an alarm to the world about Iran's danger? Bet none of those occured to you, and you didn't stop to think one minute why Israel is really doing all that "sabre rattling". Stupid is as stupid does -- and that's YOU, Richard!

The whole world is INSANE! I used to say , "The world is going to hell!"" Now I say, "The world has already gone to hell!" I was born in San Francisco, CA in 1943. I have seen and know what has happened, I am a disabled, 4 yr. USAFSS veteran, a Cold War vet. I missed Vietnam from 1965-69 while I served. How many #$%$ wars for "principles" and oil does it take? RISE UP, occupy your local government, stop the gangs and stop the corporate/money grubbing oligarchic/plutocratic madness! (If you are too busy with your tech - wake up. Educate yourselves AND get into the streets!) Tomorrow is the ultimate "Bread and Circus" for the masses. What about Monday . . .

I'm glad you're aware what is going on,but most Americans are not,or don't care.Considering all that they have put up with,I don't see any revolution coming. And for those that do try,the FEMA camps are at the ready...
      • GodsHolyTrousers 3 mths ago
I am not convinced that most Americans are asleep. I think that is a disinformation campaign. I feel that we are being lied to about being asleep now. I think we are awake, but the elections for Ron Paul are being stolen.

Krauthammer, who loathes Arabs and Muslims, is hinting at possible scenarios, such as an attack by Iran on the US base in Bahrain, to stoke the fires of hatred and fear against Iran and to encourage a US strike against Iran. Disgusting and immoral.

It's a good time for the average family to stop laughing at prepping and start making a plan B for a coming very difficult economic and personal security climate. In other words, the SHTF in the coming months.

Read an interesting thread from a Bosnian speaking on what you need in a SHTF scenario. Main prep items (hand sanitizer, BIC lighters, cheap liquor, Rifles of any make with ammo, Hand Guns of any make with ammo).

Why don't the Israeli leader and the Iranian leader just tie a rope around each other wrist and they each get knife.
    • M.O. Schrenk  •  Clovis, California  •  3 mths ago
You can talk all you freaking want about the Israelis starting a war, etc. The Iranians may have sealed their own fate when they declared Israel was a cancer that should and would be cut off (when that describes Radical Islam far better than anything else). Whatever else, the Jews aren't going quietly into the gas chambers this time. And if you Paulbots and OWSers don't like it, you can go sit on a thermonuclear tack....

The Saudis would be wise to position troops all along the oil pipelines right up to the terminals, same with Kuwait. All of the major pipelines in the gulf, even in Saudi Arabia run through a few Shia dominated areas, and Iran's likely response will be to attack the oil infrastructure of the gulf from afar through their dirtbag proxies. The terminal in Basra will be a lost cause. Still might be a good time to get into domestic and Canadian oil producers: CLR SU IMO. Statoil and Petroleo Brasileiro too.

What is it with you stupid people. 10 yrs of war wasn't enough. I don't want my son going back to that part of the world for ANY reason

Americans no longer have the will or stamina for a war. Proudly and sadly we have had to be the world policeman for many decades. As the Western Cultural influence continues to decline, another culteral influence, like China or even the Middle East, will take its place. It won't happen tommorrow, but it will happen and then all the wars will seem insignificant to what the price we will be paying.

I think the whole purpose of Panetta speaking candidly is to stop Israel by torpedoing any sense of catching Iran a little unprepared. In other words, by alerting Iran, Panetta is hoping Israel won't go forward. Clearly, Iran is going forward with nukes no matter what.
