Kristen Wiig Might Not Actually Be Starring in the New 'Anchorman'

Last night it was confirmed that Kristen Wiig will officially be appearing in the Anchorman sequel, but will she be one of the movie's stars or just one of its many possible cameos?

After much speculation that Wiig might join the familiar Anchorman crew, Director Adam McKay posted on Facebook

And Christina Applegate, who reprises her role as Veronica Corningstone, welcomed Wiig to the cast:

So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for anchorman2. Going 2 b best movie ever made. Besides the best movies ever made.

News that there would be a sequel to the 2004 film broke back in March of 2012, and a teaser trailer arrived in May. Though the film, subtitled The Legend Continues, is set to be released in December of this year, it's only going to start filming in March — according to Judd Apatow, anyway — so this is a pretty late announcement if Wiig is slated to have any sort of starring gig.

Wiig is reportedly playing what the studio calls a "new role," according to Nikki Finke at Deadline. Way back in December The Wrap reported that she may play a love interest for Steve Carell's simpleton weatherman Brick Tamland. In Finke's most recent report Wiig is said to have been in talks for Tamland's wife.

But will the role be a big one? It's hard to tell. McKay told The Playlist in November: "We're talking about for 'Anchorman 2' creating a murderer's row of the best day players ever. Like having every single one line or three line role, just be someone we just love. Someone like Ian Roberts or Rob Huebel or Paula Killen -- just making sure every day player is a homerun."

Now, Wiig is a bigger name than those McKay listed, and has carried a movie of her own, but we wonder if we're going to hear a lot more of these announcements as McKay lines up his "murder's row" in addition to his established company of players

Let's not forget just how murderous some of the original Anchorman's cameos could get:
