The Ku Klux Klan Is on the Prowl for New Members at a Popular Getaway Spot

Think the Ku Klux Klan is a thing of the past? Not quite.

Flummoxed residents of Hampton Bays, N.Y., reported finding fliers from the Loyal White Knights—a Klan group formed in 2012—under their doors, in their mailboxes, and on their driveways. Accompanied by recruitment forms, the leaflets depict a Jewish person, an African American, and a Latino with the message, “Beware! We want your jobs. We want your homes. We want your country.”

Mary Beth Moore, a local nun, told CBS News that the group went to work after dark: “We know somebody heard their dogs barking at midnight.”

The leaflets have been making the rounds since July. But according to The New York Times, only four people spoke out to the authorities. So far, no charges have been made, because the act is protected by freedom of speech.

Robert J. Jones, self-proclaimed grand dragon of the North Carolina–based Loyal White Knights, admitted that his group was responsible for the campaign. He said the stream of immigrants coming into the United States prompted the move.

“A lot of Americans are fed up with immigration right now,” he told the Times. “This immigration problem, immigrants coming into America, is destroying the place.”

Moore, who runs the local nonprofit organization Centro Corazon de Maria, told CBS News, “These are people who are not honorable enough to share their point of view in the daylight, and we hope they go back to North Carolina, where their horrible little pamphlets came from.”

About 30 percent of Hampton Bays residents are Hispanic, and some of them received the fliers. According to Moore, the village has the biggest population of Latinos in the Hamptons, and people there live modestly.

“[The leafleting was not] at all reflective of the community we live in,” Southampton town supervisor Anna Throne-Holst told the Times.

Meanwhile, in Missouri, a Klan chapter has been raising money for Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who shot Michael Brown on Aug. 9.
