LA considers requiring porn stars use condoms

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council is poised to give its final approval to a controversial ordinance that would require actors in adult films to use condoms.

The council tentatively adopted the ordinance last week on an 11-1 vote. If council members pass it again at Tuesday's meeting, it would be sent to the mayor for his signature.

Advocates of the ordinance say the measure is needed to prevent the spread of HIV in the multibillion-dollar adult film industry, much of which is centered in Los Angeles.

The porn industry's trade association, the Free Speech Coalition, says condoms are not needed.

Instead, the group calls for consistent testing of actors for sexually transmitted diseases. It says there have been no confirmed cases of HIV in the porn industry in five years.

The government is just trying to "protect" themselves

With few exceptions the porn industry has done a good job of regulating itself. Let the government get involved and were back to blue movies.

So what is the sudden need for this? They really didn't have anything more important?

I we have had confirmed cases. That's enouph. People have slipped through the cracks. The past. Not many, in fact, I can count them on one hand. The point I focus on is that it did actually happen, even with our testing. It's scary...

This is almost like the government requiring people to take vitamins because they may help them to not get sick. People in the porn industry are well aware of the risks they are taking and they choose to take those risks anyway. This profession is far too lucrative for the porn producers to even think about "turning viewers off" by mandating condom use in their films. If L.A. persists in this, the film-makers will simply move somewhere else to do their business. Smoking cigarettes kills THOUSANDS of people every year but the government keeps selling them because it's big money for them. IMHO, A standard and cohesive regimen of testing actors across the industry should be sufficient.

It's more like the govenment requiring people to wear seatbelts. Sales would drop for a little bit, but if protected film is the only film you could get, eventually things would pick back up. It's just and adjustment.

I think that some studios might decide to make the move, but it is much easier to recruit talent in LA and honestly I think it should be a mutual decision between both actors, and from Africa Renee's comments that does not seem to be the case. (She seems to be the most qualified commentor imo)

Why doesn't the L.A. City Council consider doing something about the homeless, the unemployed, cutting excessive spending by the City, or other important things that are going on in L.A.? Why are they wasting time on the use of condoms in the adult film industry? Doing that is just like Yahoo wasting time and time again reporting on the Kardashians. All they will end up doing is forcing the adult film industry to move out of L.A. and take all those jobs and monies that are spent back into the local economy to another city or state where they won't be hassled. I know a lot of people would like the adult film industry to move out of L.A., but how much of that billion dollar a year industry pay back in taxes and help the local businesses in the area? During this time when cities and states are looking for tax revenue and businesses looking for customers, everybody should do and support whatever measures it takes to keep the jobs from leaving. I say leave the adult film industry alone and let them regulate the use of condoms and monitor the required, consistent testing of their employees. Focus on more important matters L.A.!

This is just going to drive them over the state line to Nevada, which is dying to get the whole industry to relocate.

So if the government makes them wear one, where does the first amendment kick in. What next, you require everyone to wear one. It's a choice..or is that another America I'm thinking about???

I guess that's one way to get rid of the porn industry. Who wants to see someone having sex with a Hefty trash bag on? It seems our government just doesn't have a clue of how to NOT screw things up. They took over a "House of ill repute" in Nevada for taxes due and ran it into the ground. Leave it to the government to fail at selling sex and booze.

Glad to see that problems like crime, taxes, and immigration (just to name a few) have all been solved so that the LA City Council has been able to move onto more important issues such as this one.
