LA hardware issue led to outage for AT&T customers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — AT&T wireless customers in Los Angeles County are texting and making calls again after technicians fixed a widespread outage.

AT&T Inc. spokeswoman Meredith Red said Sunday that a hardware failure led to problems with about 900 cellular towers across the county.

The service glitches began at about 3 p.m. Saturday and contributed to an evening of missed, dropped and failed calls. Service was restored early Sunday morning.

Red says it's unclear how many wireless subscribers were affected. Users complaining about their lack of service made AT&T one of Twitter's top trending topics for Los Angeles.

Red says technicians are working to pinpoint exactly what caused the equipment failure.

I didn't notice the poor service; it's always been terrible in Downtown Los Angeles.

Can you say redundancy on critical single points of failue? I thought you could...

It's Monday and they don't know the cause of the outage? Not!

They know the cause of the outage, it was the failure of a piece of equipment. What they don't know is why the piece failed. That could take some time.

It wasn't just cell phones, it was landlines too. We were unable to use our AT&T landline, and a local business said they were having problems with their AT&T hardline as well.

@GMAN and others #$%$ ABOUT LOSING MONEY because they coud not contact their clients, Any smart business person would use the old landline as a dependable back up! and they were working well at the time. The landline may be considered a dinosaur by todays standards but is #$%$ MORE RELIABLE!!!

OMG!!! You mean people actually had to talk to each other? Face to face? Oh, the humanity!!! Will the cause of the outage ever be found? I doubt it. Does this show the problem with relying too, too, much on "cell communications"? Yes, at least to me, it does. Glad the problem was finally taken care of.

No customers. Just victims. Millions and millions of victims. att bites the bag.

Even the employees hate att. They would tell you if they could speak english.

Dead last in quality surveys, a virtual zero for reliability, insane customer service, wacko billing, the list is virtually endless. Anyone who can escape does; the rest are involuntary slaves to illegal contracts. att = rethink failure att = your world destroyed. Puke and flush now.

NSA and Recon must have screwed up an equipment upgrade.

Outages happen, some worse than others.Wait until all the networks go down. The techies will probably start jumping out of windows. There just phones, although not so to others. How sad.

Rather than spend the cash on maintenance,ATT is hanging onto it so they can acquire T-Mobile. Customers are under contract and have to pay up anyway, even if the network is down..ATT has no reason-in their own minds-to care about customer service. If the govt allows them to buy up T-Mobile,they'll be even LESS inclined to provide good service.

WOuldn't it be ironic if AT&T got broken up as a monopoly TWICE!!! Think of all the "baby bell" cell phones services that would generate at new, higher rates!

att is the worst service. I switched a long time ago

Not true. The outages started Saturday in the morning. I was unable to contact clients and lost $$$ because of this "Glitch." I saw AT&T trucks zooming with lights flashing all over the Antelope Valley, Sat. morning. Thanks AT&T for costing me $$$.
      • Runsrealfast 8 mths ago
since the cause is unknown you can't necessarily blame ATT...
      • Glenn 8 mths ago
Also, if you "saw AT&T trucks zooming with lights flashing all over the Antelope Valley, Sat. morning"...what does that tell you??? ~ that they were aggresively having their people address the problem. Yes? ....you bet it does. Cell phones, like everything else man made, will fail from time to time. You got your service back and it's working again. I'd say they did a great job!

No redundancy? No systems to pinpoint the failure location? No explanation? ATT blows.
    • another victim  •  8 mths ago
Talk on the net is that att is going to buy Libya and use the entire country as a toxic waste dump for all of their failed technlogy since nothing works. Anyone verify that? Has it been confirmed? Maybe they could dump all of their psycho loony tune staff their also. Just a thought.
