De La Hoya admits addictions in TV interview

Former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya said thought about suicide and has been going to rehab because he has become dependent on drugs and alcohol in an interview with Spanish-language network Univision.

"Rock bottom was recently," De La Hoya said, according to an English-language transcript provided by the network. "Within couple of years, just thinking if my life was even worth it. I don't have the strength, I don't have the courage to take my own life but I was thinking about it."

De La Hoya says he has been sober for three months after undergoing treatment and joining Alcoholics Anonymous.

He said he was unfaithful to his wife and that they were separated for a while.

"We are obviously not talking a Tiger Woods here, but I was unfaithful," De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya retired in 2009 after a 16-year career in which he won 10 world titles in six divisions and became boxing's most popular fighter.

De La Hoya was thoroughly beaten by Manny Pacquiao in his last fight. He won his last title in May 2006, beating Ricardo Mayorga in six rounds for the WBC 154-pound belt. He finished with a record of 39-6 and 30 knockouts.

Known as "The Golden Boy," De La Hoya transcended his sport, using his bilingual skills to generate crossover appeal among Latinos and whites.

He began boxing at age 5, following in the path of his grandfather and father. He won an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games, delivering on a promise to his late mother, Cecilia, who died of breast cancer two years earlier.

"There were drugs, my drug of choice was cocaine and alcohol, hmm. Cocaine was recent. The last 2 years, last 2½ years and I depended more in the alcohol than the cocaine," De La Hoya said. "It took me to a place where I felt safe, it took me to a place where I felt as if nobody can say anything to me, it took me to a place where I just can reach out and grab my mom."

well like they say life is a Bi$&# and you married once but is never too late to react that is the way of life, Oscar drugs are not the solution, think of a better way, I remember when I went to high school and I was taking drugs, then I knew this Cuban girl who I like very much  she wasn’t taking drugs and I ask myself if I love her and she is not addicted to dope or any other drugs why should I? Hope you get the point and I hope you get better and of course now is the time to think about your wife and kids don’t let that destroy you, think about them first, good luck! Higher self esteem is one of the solutions.

Who cares Del La Hoya.. You went from a dirty fighter to a dirty promater. You fixed that fight and robbed Agbeko of his title. You got the nerve accusing Pac of doping and you now admit you did? What a pos you are slick. Cry us a river punk.

A man who is big enough to address, especially publicly address, his faults and downfalls is a man who you can trust with your life because he is true to himself and his loved-ones. The people who bag on Oscar (or any man or woman) for this are maggots who can't stand to look into the mirror because they hate something about themselves and enjoy releasing their self-dissapointment and self sorrow on others because it briefly releases them from their feelings of worthless. For those of you who fall into that category, congrats, you have found you're soul-mates right here on the yahoo boards.

old news... Report on how Bleacher Report received 22 million dollars from a private investment firm. and since 2010 they have always ran light hearted articles about Floyd Mayweather Jr. and biasedly questioned Manny Pacquiao's success. Some one should look up the 22 million dollars that that firm gets to publish articles that hurt boxing.

The writer of this column needs to acknowlege that De La Hoya has "crossover appeal" to more than "Latinos and Whites". I wish they would spend more time and thought on re-reading their pieces. I am neither White or Latino and have bought all of his 10 championship matches on PPV @ $50 a pop.

I agree! Obviously he brought Hopkins and Mosley to Golden Boy Promotions. They were and have been very successful under De La Hoya as well. I didn't agree with that part of the article. I wonder why they would say he "reached out" (in other words) to Latinos and Whites only. I know at one point he was searching for another big name from the Asian community as well. He was traveling to Thailand and the Philippines apparently. Anyway, point is he reached out to all cultures not just 1 or 2.

It is easy to be conquered by evil spirit when you have plenty of money. To counter this, always put "GOD" first in everything that you do. Always pray to God. Talk to him every minute, every hour, everyday. God be with you always idol Golden Boy.

I agree and it helps if your spirit tells your body to shut up. I am not buying all of his story and if ya look at some of his fights he has coke eyes all glassy.
