LA police officer killed in crash identified

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have identified a veteran Los Angeles police officer who was killed when his patrol car collided with a big rig in Beverly Hills.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office says 40-year-old Nicholas Choung Lee died in Wednesday morning's crash.

Lee was training a rookie who was only three months out of the police academy when their cruiser collided with a truck hauling a trash container and carrying a Bobcat loader. The patrol car was practically demolished.

The other officer and the truck driver are hospitalized but they're expected to survive. Police Commission President Steve Soboroff says the injured officer told him she has a concussion and a bruised face.

Police Chief Charlie Beck says the truck may have lost its brakes on the steep road.
