Landmark gay history bill goes to Calif. governor

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers on Tuesday sent the governor a bill that would make the state the first requiring public schools to include the contributions of gays and lesbians in social studies curriculum.

The bill, passed on a party-line vote, adds lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as people with disabilities to the list of groups that schools must include in the lessons. It also would prohibit material that reflects adversely on gays.

Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco says SB48 is crucial because of the bullying that happens to gay students. Republicans called it a well-intentioned but ill-conceived bill and raised concerns that it would indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality.

"This bill will require California schools to present a more accurate and nuanced view of American history in our social science curriculum by recognizing the accomplishments of groups that are not often recognized," said Assembly Speaker John Perez, the first openly gay speaker of the California Assembly.

The bill now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, who has not said whether he would sign it. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill in 2006.

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a Republican from Twin Peaks, said he was offended as a Christian that the bill was being used to promote a "homosexual agenda" in public schools.

"I think it's one thing to say that we should be tolerant," Donnelly said. "It is something else altogether to say that my children are going to be taught that this lifestyle is good."

California law already requires schools to teach about women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labor. The Legislature over the years also has prescribed specific lessons about the Irish potato famine and the Holocaust, among other topics.

SB48 would require, as soon as the 2013-2014 school year, the California Board of Education and local school districts to adopt textbooks and other teaching materials that cover the contributions and roles of sexual minorities.

The legislation leaves it to local school boards to decide how to implement the requirement. It does not specify a grade level for the instruction to begin.

Opponents argued that such instruction would further burden an already crowded curriculum and expose students to a subject that some parents find objectionable. Assemblyman Chris Norby, R-Fullerton, said the bill micromanages the classroom.

"Our founding fathers are turning over in their graves," Donnelly said.

The bill's author, Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, said he hopes Brown will sign his bill. He dismissed arguments that the bill promotes certain sexual behaviors and said it removes censorship in textbooks.

"Bottom line, it's only beneficial to share with students the broad diversity of the human experience and that our democracy protects everyone," he said.

Before the Assembly vote, Perez pointed to a few contributions of gay people, including Friedrich von Steuben, one of George Washington's military advisers who fled Prussia after he was hounded as a homosexual.

Von Steuben is credited with being one of the fathers of the Continental Army and teaching essential military drills.

He also cited Alan Turing, a mathematician who helped crack Nazi Germany's secret codes by creating the "Turing bombe," a forerunner of modern computers.

Some churches and conservative family groups warned the bill will drive more parents to take their children out of public schools.

"This sexual brainwashing bill would mandate that children as young as 6 years old be told falsehoods — that homosexuality is biological, when it isn't, or healthy, when it's not," said Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com.

The Assembly passed the bill on a 49-25 vote.

Proud to be a parent that homeschools. School is about learning and getting an education. IT'S NOT ABOUT SEXUAL ORIENTATION! They have passed laws about this for Americans even when it comes to jobs. Why do you have to go that far to say by the way the guy is gay. You can tell about history wthout telling about sexual orientation. I'M TOTALLY AGAINST THIS. I'M SAD THAT I CAN'T HAVE MY CHILD IN PUBLIC SCHOOL. I don't want my child learning this crap! What is this country coming to. Our four fathers are rolling in their graves and the people and citizens in the USA have their brains made out of trash. :( Am I the only one here with with a brain that sees this for what it is.My children will be subject to such hogwash. It's just another way for the state to control us. Fight people. Get courage! I was born and raised here in CA. I loved it for what it was. I hate it now for what it has become and I am now having this same attitude with the USA. I'm not proud to be a citizen in this.

Can you tell the history of slavery without mentioning that they were African American?
      • Kaytelin Core 4 mths ago
It's Forefathers, not four fathers. I see you're children will be getting a wonderful education Wendy.
Maybe you should contact the police and have them remove the person who is holding a gun to your head and making you stay not only in California, but in America.

I would never allow my kids to have a gender coach or to be taugh to be queer!
You need to to stop forcing disgusting habits on people and start handing out bibles!
      • Kaytelin Core 4 mths ago
You mean disgusting habits like being a narrow-minded ignorant bigot?
      • bigbadude 4 mths ago

Gayness is a sexual preference it doesnt need to be taught to kids at school. when i was a kid i did not have to worry about teachers teaching this kind of wierd stuff to me. Kids just cant comprehend this at that age nor should LGBT try and force them to.
      • andreast86 10 mths ago
By calling it "weird stuff", you probably cant comprehend it well either. They are not teaching gay sex. They are teaching the acceptance of a group of people that have been killed, and oppressed for the greater part of history. It is as important to teach the oppression of a people. It is like when African American's were thought of as animals without human rights. As people were taught about African American's the hate went away.
      • Kaytelin Core 4 mths ago
Exactly Andrea. It's also not a preferance, it is a fact of life. Why would I "choose" to be a social outcast, be beaten and more for being myself, then fight for my rights? Anybody who thinks that it's a choice is clearly not used to thinking.
    • mayfieldsplace  •  10 mths ago
I'm against bullyng and torturing people because their sin is outward. We all have fell short of the glory of God. There is NO way I'd stand for allowing these lifestyle choices to be betrayed to my children as acceptable let alone something to be emulated. Stand up for our right to say NO and no more. If a person contributed a worthy act to the country name that thing not their sexual deviancies. We don't tell the kids about unfaithful spouses in history unless their wickedness was exposed as such. Don't change that for child molesters, homsexuals, lesbians, etc.

14If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
      • Kaytelin Core 4 mths ago
Where did the article mention child molesters? Typical ignorant bigot.

I know what GOD says about these idiots that doing this type of thing.
GOD IS RIGHT AND EVERYBODY ELSE IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1Corinthians 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor abusers, nor homosexuals,
1Corinthians 6:10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
      • 3ple2ble 10 mths ago
W.M.........when was the last time you got drunk? when was the last time you fornicated? When was the last time you idolized your god? you ever desired something anyone else had? EVER? I guess you are gonna be on the outside looking in.....at an empty room!!!!
      • Kaytelin Core 4 mths ago
1 Corinthians never uses the word homosexuals, or any Greek equivilant. Yes W.M., 1 Corinthians was written in ancient Greek. The word used was "arsenokoitai", which commonly refers to the use of the Pagan temple prostitutes to ensure a good crop. If Paul wanted to condemn homosexuality, he would have used the word "paiderasste", which was the Greek equivilant of today's word "homosexual".
A word of advice W.M., do some research of your own. Just because the man in the dress at the front of your church says something, that does not mean you have to keep your head up his fanny and swallow everything he feeds you.

As a California parent, get your kids OUT (no pun intended) of the California public schools! This is what happens when a bunch of misfits (no pun intended . . . again!) are desperate to have others view them as NORMAL . . . poor dears!
    • NoelM  •  10 mths ago
The bottom line should be very simple. Tell all schools to teach kids the contributions of all important parties, whatever their differences. Don't prescribe the inclusion of specific groups. if a person did something great for America, tell it. And don't tell that person's story with a special tint on his ethnicity or sexual orientation. Report the facts, but if a person didn't do something great, don't include him just because he's from a minority group.

Perhaps teaching basic biology and educating students as to sexually transmitted diseases would be more logical. In California, English might be a good thing to consider also.

So, broke California has to print all new books?

All of this legislation is costing the tax payers hundreds of millions.

All to satisfy less than 1% of the population....

really...with the economic mess the WHOLE state is suffering from, this is their accomplishment. no wonder our state is the joke of the rest of the country.
    • ctrandrm  •  10 mths ago
If people want to address bullying in school, then fine, but if homosexuals think they have the market cornered on being harassed in school, then they have got another thing coming. Millions of children are bullied over body image, religion, economic status, ethnicity, and much more. What makes homosexuals so special that we have to rewrite schoolbooks now? Why are they so bent on making sure that their lifestyle choice is accepted in every aspect of American life? Look it's their choice to be gay and they are free to live that way, but that doesn't mean I have to like it and it doesn't mean my kids have to be taught it. I don't have a personal problem with anyone wanting to be gay but it has now gone officially too far with it becoming a national movement that affects everything from politics to education. People can't bring the Bible or the creation story up in school because it will offend liberal atheists and other non-Christians; well why should this be any different? Leave it out of the schools and keep it in the bedroom.

its too bad that our children arent not allow to grow up and make some of there own dicisitons..............TO MUCH GOV......JUST SAY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    • David  •  10 mths ago
History is filled with the exploits of gays and lesbians. But in a normal history book nobody cares where they stick their genitals, whose genitals they prefer, what sort of clothing they preferred to wear, or any of that CRAP. These people didn't do these things BECAUSE THEY WERE GAY. They just did these things - PERIOD. Governments feel the need to divide us into groups so that we will hate and fight each other instead of joining together to realize that GOVERNMENT is our greatest enemy.

Homeschool, send your kids to private school, do whatever it takes to remove your children from the negative and destructive influence of government education. They are singlehandedly destroying america. This is not about just this, but about everything they teach, starting with the destruction of your child's individuality.

People have accomplishments in history....no one cares who or what they screwed.
    • David  •  10 mths ago
So I guess that they will now say that Barney Frank is gay, and helped ruin an economy in the textbooks...

You politicians keep pushing "The People" to accept your twisted agendas, but are you prepared for when "The People" push back? It's coming.
    • Stymie  •  10 mths ago
California legislators are butt hole surfers if they go for this crap. We have more important issues than what the gays have done in history. Keep you sexual agenda to yourselves. Don't force me to accept your gayness, you are opening up a can of worms you do not want to see the reaction to. It won't be pretty, I guarantee that!
    • noonesmudduck  •  10 mths ago
More dumbing down of America.Allot of kids don't even know U.S. history and now they are going to take up precious time to teach this cr-p.
    • NE Philly  •  10 mths ago
Since gay people didn't starting coming out until like 10-20 years ago how does anyone know who was gay and who wasn't? And why does it matter what George Washington may have done when he was alone and not out kicking British arse? It sounds like the people who came up with this need to fill some emptiness inside.

If they teach it like they do math, everyone will be straight in a generation.
