Large Study Links Depression and Low Levels of Vitamin D

A study published by a joint venture of the University of Texas Southwest's Medical Center and the Cooper Institute in Dallas has linked low levels of vitamin D to depression, according to the Mother Nature Network. The study appears in the latest edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

What are the specifics of this study?

Researchers compared the vitamin D test results of about 12,600 adults over four years, beginning in late 2006. According to ProHealth, participants were divided into two groups, based on whether they had a past history of suffering from depression. The participants' current levels of vitamin D were then tested, as well as their current depressive symptoms, or lack thereof.

    What did the study find?

Scientists found people that currently had low levels of vitamin D, particularly if they had a past history of depression, were significantly more likely to display depressive symptoms than people with normal or high levels of vitamin D. EmaxHealth reported these findings corroborate and provide a more solid basis for earlier, smaller studies that had seemed to indicate a link between the two but had ultimately been deemed inconclusive. This current study is among the largest ever to test the relationship between depression and vitamin D deficiency.

Based on the findings, what did the researchers conclude?

That testing people who are displaying symptoms of depression for low levels of vitamin D would be wise. The team stopped short, however, of actually recommending supplements, asserting that more research into the link between the two needed to be conducted.

Although they established a link between the two, scientists are unsure which comes first, the vitamin D deficiency or the depression. It is possible that depression can lower a person's levels of vitamin D, but it is considered just as likely that a vitamin D deficiency causes depression. According to UPI, researchers believe the link may have to do with the way that vitamin D and depression affect neurotransmitters and inflammatory markers, among other systems in the body.

    What's next?

Researchers might have established a link between vitamin D deficiency, but they haven't proven how the two actually interact with each other. Because of that fact, it also remains unknown as to whether or not providing supplements to raise the vitamin D levels of a person suffering from depression would actually be effective.

This is why Afghan women suffered from depression at epidemic rates under the Taliban. Not only because of the horrific conditions they lived under, but they were never allowed out into the sunlight! No Vitamin D, ever, for 5 years. I hope there's a special hell for the Taliban.

My sister, who suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder every winter, started taking Vitamin D in 2010 and no longer has bouts of depression this time of the year. THEY may not recommend it, but I do to everyone I know.

I have had depression for my entire adult life, I started taking calcium w/vitamin D about 6 months ago and see a HUGE improvement in my mood even in the winter when it's usually really bad. I only noticed that it was working when I stopped taking it for a brief period... jmho

I have SADS but it doesn't really hit me untill after the false spring in February... then the Box car storms set in and I am hit with depression like I've been hit with a box car... I don't get out of it till after the speing rains ... a terrible time to get through every year. This year I will try the Vitamin D suppliment and see if there is a difference.

To understand depression, you have to have depression because nobody understands me or others with it.

You are so right unless someone experiences depression then they can not possibly understand how a person suffering from it feels, it is much worse then physical pain.

I use to suffer from extreme depression every winter(I live in upstate NY).A few years ago I began taking 2000 I.U. vitamin D3 a day and have not had one episode of depression since. One little pill erased a liftime of dread.I share this in the hopes it will help others to rid themselves of this monster.

Thank you. I've been depressed myself, in the past, but no more. I've been taking 2000 IUs/day for years. Maybe that's it. What's more likely, or just as important, is that I've much more to be happy about now in my life. However, I'm not about to stop taking the vitamin D3. I'm sure it helps with mental function, as well as perhaps over a hundred other functions in our bodies.

Very glad to hear it works for you! I also take 2000 I.U. of D3 daily (brand is Blue Bonnet) and feel it helps, but I still miss the sunshine in the winter!

Your welcome,Jack.I'm sure your right that having things to be happy about helps alot.It just seems that now I recognize more of those things and the things that should get me down seem to be in better perspective now

If someone is deficient than levels should be raised, regardless if it will help with depression or not. But, I bet it will.

As a northerner, I used to get S.A.D every fall and winter (despite a healthy diet coupled with plenty of exercise, which usually helps) with a return to normalcy in the spring. During a routine blood lab, it was discovered that my vitamin D levels were a whopping 7. SEVEN! Checked again in the summer, they were above 40. I have taken a Vit D supplement every fall and winter for the past several years, levels now test great and I no longer get the "winter blues". Most of the time depression is not something someone can just will themselves out of. And from experience, I would say that Vit D may play a role in some cases, particularly for us that are sun deprived for much of the year.

I am going to try this. I have had severe SAD for years beginning about November and ending in April as shown on my records but never thought about the Vit D deficiency from lack of sun. I live in the South and stop going outside due to dead plants and Winter itself. I am a boater and love the summer and all comes to and end in November...then it is like I hibernate, get depressed and put myself in a bubble until about April. I am buying supplements tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

I had it a lot when I lived in Ohio. Since I moved to Florida 4 years ago I have not had hardly any problem with it...sunshine is good

Decades ago, the Swedes found that people who lived above the Arctic Circle were exhibiting very profound personality changes that were especially pronounced during the winter months(very short daylight hours.) They found that exposure to sun lamps for controlled lengths of time reversed the symptoms. Nice to see we have finally caught up with the Swedes.

People have been brainwashed into avoiding the sun, thinking they're preventing skin cancer. They're not preventing skin cancer, they're preventing vitamin D synthesis. Some sunlight is necessary for health and hormone production.

Could it be that low levels of vitamin D are the cause of SADD (seasonal affective depressive disorder), where some people get depressed in the winter? It makes sense since vitamin D is generally from the action of sun on your skin and there's way less skin exposed to sun, (and sunshine for that matter), in the winter.

When I got my physical last year, I wanted to get my vitamin D level checked, because it has been low in the past. The lab told me that my insurance dropped their coverage for that test, and it would cost me $80 out of pocket to get it done. I guess I take a guess at how much of a supplement to take and hope I don't overshoot it. So much for preventative medicine.

Easiest way to get Vit D is to be outside in the Sun once in awhile.....Maybe this is why Vampires are so moody and depressing.
    • Coyote  •  Las Vegas, Nevada  •  4 mths ago
Being Depressed might cause a vitamin D deficiency due to when you are depressed you do not want to frolic in the sun with puppies.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that correlation does not equal causation.

The most current data shows that depression is caused by immune reactions in the gastrointestinal tract. High levels of antibody production lower vitamin D levels, so this is a predictable effect.

The medical mafia never recommends vitamins or any other natural cure, because it interferes with their big fat earnings. They're afraid people will be healthy by taking over the counter supplements. It's always a joke that they say they stop short or recommending any type of nutrient.

A true believer in Vitamin D. Was first given it for osteoarthritis, I felt better, then was told my level was high enough and taken off the supplement. Then in about a month more severe pain, then given another script- felt better-level up, taken off- felt bad. Yoyo Please doc just leave me on it. Nightshift worker

This is cool, if it's true, but I feel that someone should have noticed this correlation decades ago. Of course, depression, like most major medical conditions, probably has an enormous number of triggers and causes related to it.
    • HeatherC  •  4 mths ago
I agree. I was diagnosed with PPD after the birth of my daughter. Two years later I was diagnosed with severely low levels of D and since then have had no symptoms of depression or anxiety disorder. Some people are more sensitive than others no doubt, but not to discount the relation or possible relations between the two...

this cannot have been a secret or as new as they make it seem, because my doc put me on vitamin D a year or more ago, for my depression. and I think it helps. It also ties in to the late winter fight with depression I seem to get into every year.
