    Last Briton to serve in WWI dies at 110

    LONDON (AP) — Florence Green, Britain's last veteran of World War I, has died at the age of 110.

    Briar House Care Home in Kings Lynn, England, says Green died Saturday.

    Born Florence Beatrice Patterson, she joined the Women's Royal Air Force in September 1918 at the age of 17.

    She went to work as a waitress in the officers' mess at RAF Marham in eastern England, and was serving there when the war ended in November 1918.

    She was officially recognized as a veteran when a researcher found her service record in the National Archives.

    The RAF marked her 110th birthday in February 2011 with a cake.

    Asked what it was like to be 110, Green said "It's not much different to being 109."

    The war's last known combat survivor, Claude Choules, died in Australia last year.

      I once asked a friend on the occasion of his 90th birthday what ti felt like to be 90. I meant it in jest but he gave me a very honest answer. He said he really didnt feel or think, or believe any different than he did when he was 20. He said the frustration of old age comes when the body no longer can accomodate the thoughts, ideas, and activities of that long gone 20 something. Then he told me with a smile that he still sometimes feels like a 25 year old, but at 90 he can no longer catch one--, that, and he was grateful for surviving a war that many of his friends did not. He said he now appreciates life as a gift and not as right as he did in his youth. He then warned me that kids and friends grow old too and he never ever heard of a person on their death bed expressing the regret that they didn't make more money or spend more time at work and less with their children and friends.

      My Mum made it to 93 and died unexpectedly and the one thing that I will always remember is her wicked English sense of humor.

      I have noticed that the people who reach an active productive old age are generally the ones that spend much of their youth in the service of others. The donald trumps and howard hughes of the world tend to die off earlier surrounded by their egos, their cash, their lawyers and not much of anything else. He who dies with the most toys is still dead.
