Your Latest Anti-SOPA Celeb? Al Gore

Your Latest Anti-SOPA Celeb? Al Gore

Passage of the Stop Online Piracy Act could "have the effect of really shutting down the vibrancy of the Internet," Al Gore warned this week, according to Mashable.

Speaking to a crowd at a CareerBuilder, Gore joined the chorus of people who warn that the effort to ratchet back piracy could lead to censorship and a dulling of the Internet's innovative essence. Interestingly enough, the YouTube clip of Gore's remarks was quickly removed by the user who posted it.

Those warnings continue now, even with Congress inactive, CNN notes. The rumor that has garnered the most traction is that the heaviest of the heavy hitters are considering a strike to make the depth of their opposition to the bill plain.

Interest in the debate spiked again this week when one of the bill's opponents suggested that online heavyweights such as Google, Facebook, Amazon and Twitter had considered a "nuclear option" -- temporarily shutting down their sites in protest -- to raise awareness about the bills, which await lawmakers when they return this month.

When contacted by CNN, none of those companies would confirm that such a drastic move had ever been considered. By Friday, the advocate whose comments had fueled the speculation appeared to back away from claims that a Web blackout was still likely to occur.

"Internet and technology companies will continue to educate policymakers and other stakeholders on the problems with the (legislation)," Markham Erickson, director of Web trade associationNetCoalition, said in a statement. "An 'Internet blackout' would obviously be both drastic and unprecedented."

But they aren't the only adamant ones. Some SOPA opponents have pushed an alternative anti-piracy bill called OPEN (including Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Ron Wyden) that would alleviate some concerns by replacing the Department of Justice as the enforcement agency for its provisions.

In a blog post on the website of the Recording Industry Association of America, as reported by The Washington Post, the organization's senior executive vice president, Mitch Glazier, derides the framework of OPEN, saying it wouldn't solve a costly problem for entertainment companies.

Why in the world would we shift enforcement against these sites from the Department of Justice and others who are well-versed in these issues to the ITC, which focuses on patents and clearly does not operate on the short time frame necessary to be effective? In addition, the remedy traditionally offered by the ITC – an exclusion order to prevent foreign criminals from accessing the US market – is precluded under the OPEN Act.

More proof why the OPEN Act is not a meaningful solution to a serious problem.

No deal appears likely, at least not yet.

Conservative or liberal...SOPA is a BAD law that will kill the internet. I say this as an artist myself who worries about copyright infringement of my own work. SOPA would make it impossible for any web host to support user submitted content because the web site would be liable for the posting of any copyright protected material or links to websites that contain copyrighted material. That would put a total end to blogs, posting videos, and anything else where people post their own material online. The corporate conglomerates want to turn the internet into something like TV where they are the ones who provide the sole content for viewers to pay for. The biggest irony is, several of the supporters of SOPA actually created and post the software that is used for downloading things like music and videos illegally. By doing so, they can point to all the illegal piracy that is going on (that they helped create) so as to take over control of the internet.

Of course, the RIAA, et al, doesn't want to lose the power to have law enforcement kick your door down, search your stuff, and throw you in jail. Of course, Gore's name alone will drive away MILLIONS of conservatives from this issue, which is hilarious as there is no group that spends more time talking about the government taking away our civil liberties.

all you people that say it wont pass.....take a look at how many times Glass-Steigel didn't pass. since the 60's they started trying to get rid of Glass-Steigel...guess what they got rid of it in 1999, and the economy crashed 10 years later.... dont be so sure that YOUR rights will always be there.

Even if it passes, the courts will throw it out, and the revolt of citizens will make the politicans wish they died as children. Hackers will fight back at a level never seen before and the media industry will get a backlash so bad that their execs will crawl into a corner and cry for their mommy,

Also means that if you are going to reveal some information about any product like a user review you have to ask for permission to do that to manufacturer, Of course the manufacturer will have the opportunity to sensor it. and the public never has the oportunity to be well inform.
Like recall on cars, reviews on toys, and etc....

Everyone that works on networks know that doesn't exist full security. SOPA is a shortcut to restrict the traffic on Internet. Also allow to access you personal information with warrant or not. among others things that is going against constitution first amendment. free of speech.

SOPA is very bad but its part of a two-fer. Google SIPA which is its twin and which congress is trying to quietly slide past the sight of the American People. If both pass, then the internet will be locked up to regular Joes like us. I think there is a very good chance that this will pass. Its a horns lock battle between the likes of YouTube and Google who are against this travesty and the music industry and Hollywood just to name a few. This is not about the common Joe so much as it is a battle of Titans. DarkRubyMoon is right on: BOTH are very bad laws that will kill the internet.

Y'know, people make fun of him for that, despite that he never said it directly. Though, the funniest thing ever is... do you know who's responsible for getting ARPANET, and thus, the internet, into the hands of the public and out of DARPA? Do you know who started the initiatives to get fiber optic cable laid down all over the country? Who snagged up the flagging network information protocols and decided they were to be the backbone of a new information network protocol that now covers the world? That's right. Al Gore. You actually wouldn't be complaining on this about the internet without Al Gore. So laugh it up, fuzzball.
