Latest developments in the Occupy protests

    CALIFORNIA

In Los Angeles, city leaders hope the seven-week-old Occupy LA encampment will disband sometime next week. More than 480 tents were erected on the lawns of City Hall. The camp has remained largely peaceful since police and city officials established a relationship early on based on dialogue instead of dictates.

Thursday, activist Teri Adaju, 46, said she typically serves dinner to homeless people on Thanksgiving and knows that many at the Los Angeles encampment were just that.

In San Francisco, 400 occupiers at a plaza in the financial district were served traditional Thanksgiving fixings sent by the renowned Glide Memorial Church to volunteers and supporters of the movement fighting social and economic inequality.

"We are thankful that we are, first and foremost, in a country where we can protest," said the Rev. Cecil Williams, the founder of Glide and a fixture in the city's activist community.

Oakland police say that when a truck driver tried to deliver a portable restroom to protesters Thursday at Frank Ogawa Plaza, officers ordered the driver to leave because he had no permit. Police and about 150 protesters squared off; one person was arrested.

    MAINE

Five people face charges in Portland after police were called to investigate four separate assaults at the OccupyMaine encampment in Lincoln Park. The arrests were announced amid growing concerns over health and safety issues at the park, where OccupyMaine protesters have been camping since early October

    MASSACHUSETTS

A judge has banned a Framingham woman from the Occupy Boston camp after she allegedly interfered with a domestic violence investigation at the site, failed to appear in court and punched two police officers and kicked another over two separate occasions.

Nineteen-year-old Jade Anderson was arraigned Friday on charges of disorderly conduct and several assault offenses. A Boston Municipal Court judge set bail at $850 and ordered Anderson to stay away from any Occupy Boston activities in the city. Her attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.

    MINNESOTA

Heavy security kept a close eye at anti-Wall Street protesters who showed up at Republican Michele Bachmann's Black Friday book signing at the Mall of America in Bloomington.

The GOP presidential candidate signed copies of her "Core of Conviction" autobiography in a private area of the megamall. At least a dozen members from the Minnesota offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement bought copies so they could approach her.

Several uniformed and plain-clothed officers prevented the protesters from bringing in signs and let them into the room one at a time. Bachmann foes and fans alike were subject to bag searches and pat-downs before entering. Reporters were not allowed in the room when the protesters came through.

Anti-Wall Street protesters in Minneapolis plan to erect 99 tents next week in defiance of Hennepin County rules and a federal judge's decision. The Occupy Minneapolis Events Committee says the protesters have the right to assemble and the right to shelter.

The 99 tents relate to an Occupy slogan suggesting that 1 percent of the nation's population controls the wealth and the other 99 percent suffers the consequences.

    NEVADA

Occupy protesters had a potluck meal on Thanksgiving Day at their campsite near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Organizer Sebring Frehner said he was happy to skip his traditional meal at home. "Instead of hunkering down with five or six close individuals in your home, people you probably see all of the time anyway, you are celebrating Thanksgiving with many different families — kind of like the original Thanksgiving," he said.

    NEW YORK

In New York, a squabble erupted when police ordered a halt to drumming by protesters at an otherwise traditional holiday meal. About 500 protesters were digging into donated turkey and trimmings at lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park when police told a drummer to drop playing.

About 200 protesters surrounded a group of about 30 officers and began shouting in the park where the Occupy movement was launched Sept. 17.

"Why don't you arrest the drummers in the Thanksgiving parade?" a protester hollered.

A van rolled up with more officers, but they stayed back as protesters eventually decided to call off the drumming and return to their food. Tensions have run high at the park since campers were evicted Nov. 15.

    OKLAHOMA

A group of Occupy OKC activists were arrested and jailed after a protest at a Del City Wal-Mart store.

Occupy OKC participant Mark Faulk said 10 members of the group were arrested early Friday after conducting a group chant inside the store in the Oklahoma City suburb. Faulk said the protesters were jailed for disorderly conduct, and five of them were released on bond Friday morning.

Faulk contended police used excessive force by tackling and handcuffing participants who were heading toward the exit after being asked to leave by store personnel. Del City Police Lt. Steve Robinson disagreed.

Faulk said the group was protesting wage disparity of store workers with that of corporate officers.

    OREGON

Eugene police say Occupy protesters chanted and used a bullhorn during early shopping hours Friday at two Wal-Mart stores; one person was arrested on a trespassing charge.

    PENNSYLVANIA

Occupy Harrisburg says a member of its group was arrested at a city mall on Black Friday over a zombie outfit.

Lower Allen Township police confirm that a person dressed as a zombie was arrested after refusing mall security's request to remove the facial makeup.

The Capital City Mall bans outfits that hide a person's face. Police say the others agreed to wash off their makeup.

Occupy Harrisburg organizers say members dressed as zombies to protest the consumerism of the celebrated shopping day. They say the protesters walked peacefully through the mall early Friday and did not disrupt shoppers.

Police charged the protester with misdemeanor trespassing.

    WASHINGTON

Occupy Seattle says it's promoting homemade gifts and local businesses as an alternative to what it calls "rampant consumerism that plagues society, destroys the environment and supports the 1 percent" that controls most of the wealth.

Eleven Score and four years ago, our fore fathers ratified a Constitution part of which laid down the requisits for holding office in a Higher house of our legeslature now known as the US Senate.
While, initially, true and honest men occupied this higher house, over time the newer members have chosen to represent and defer to the requests of the wealthiest 1% who try to maintain a wall of protection between themselves and the 99% remaining by sitting on Gover-ning boards of large Corporations and/or becoming major stockholders in those same Corporations.
Therefore, these wealthy few claim a certain right to preferential consideration through legeslation. Being truely greatful for such prefered consideration, the wealthy choose to confer gifts or should should we say tokens of appreciation upon their Political friends. Such things as very low cost maintenance free leases on Chalets in Vale,Colorado or vast amounts in campaign funding paid through various proxies to avoid campaign donation limits.
All this to help establish the fact that, until the rest of us have had enough, government of the Corprate Wealthy, bought and paid for by the Corprate Wealthy, and exclusively for the Corprate Wealthy Shall continue to reak havoc on our economy with impunity, for Greed's sake!

While, initially, true and honest men occupied this higher house
        ------------------------------------------
Many true patriots loathed anyone connected with national politics from the period of the Continental Congress forward into the earliest years of the republic and beyond. Alexander Hamilton frankly pandered to them and those who paid them off. You've listened to far too much inane propaganda from dimwit civics and history teachers (index award-winning James Loewen from Catholic Univ History Dept and read: Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, 1995 plus more books) You're completely misinformed and clueless of how ignorant you truly are. As for the current state of politics and politicians--you nailed that on the head. Tell you what, here's a fun thought question: Why did the Founding Fathers pay such close attention to how to set up all the politics/government to ensure their view of fairness, but left everything handed down from the hated Brit king and aristocrats according to the status quo before the Revolutionary War broke out? Those favored under the Brits (except of the turncoat Tories who ran) got to keep everything material and monetary on into the new republic under the new government.
      • Joseph 6 mths ago
Any body knows that the common Revolutionary loathed the idea of a government run by aristocrats. And that Alexander did pander to the wealthy. Fortune Aaron Burr took care of him.
However that did not undo the dammage such pandering did to the country as a whole.
I'm not against aristocrats as a group. Most are honorable folk who have worked hard to establish and/or maintain their place in today's world.
But when you study the various internet sights which refer to the connection between American industrialist and financiers, and Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany and find that they continued to provided support to the Nazi Warmacht almost up to VE Day, the sickenning truths come into perspective.
These sights show how these traitors chose profits over patriotism. A practice American profiteers continue to this very day.
They enjoy huge profits by selling their wares and services to all sides in vny number of conflicts around the globe and then expect us to send in the Marines any time their material interests are threatened overseas.
Such actions prove that our Government is truley of the Wealthy, by the wealthy, and for the wealthy.
Seriously, check it out for your self.

      Pass the "STOCK ACT" !!!!

Politicians are getting rich off of inside trading information!!!! The same CRIMINAL acts that Martha Stewart went to prison for, but all these politicians are getting away with it!!! The "STOCK ACT" was created to stop this illegal activity, and it got no support because of all the crooked politicians making a killing with inside trading information. They did not want this Bill to pass, because then they couldn't make money off of having inside information!!! This is unfair and illegal, and it's time to put a stop to it, and hold any and all participants accountable for their illegal acts!! Many deserve prison for this, it's time to stop the corruption in politics and demand justice against these crimial acts!! Please support the "STOCK ACT" and stop this corruption, and to bring to justice those who participated in these illegal acts !!!

What the OWS and every citizen of the USA should do as one of the first things concerning changing the government, is to have term limits for Congress. People talk about it, but it has never gotten done. I think this is extremely important. Maybe if Congressmen weren't always looking to the next election and knew they were there for a short time, they would work for the good of the people. Our forefathers intended men to come in from the fields, so to speak, and in a lot of cases, literally, and serve in Congress for 3 or 4 years and then return to their homes. They didn't want it to be a lifelong profession where they enjoy high salaries and perks. The longer they are in Congress, the more corrupt it can become. Term limits, to me, are very important.
      • lazy t 6 mths ago
I think i agree with you but i'm concerned about what quality of candadates term limits may cause, It will not be a good bisiness move for someone to take a 4 year chunk of time out from their career, and having alot of average intellegence people in goverment may be as bad as smart crooks, What do you think "?
      • Gus 6 mths ago
What do you think is the current intelligence level of "Congress"? Really? Do "lifer politicians" equate to "higher intelligence"? Or do lifers just equate to knowing more about how to dodge truly standing for what's important to their constituents while learning how to please lobbyists and get more free trips, campaign funds, and other luxury perks? They get smarter, alright, but not in the way you imply. No worries, though, about the "dumber, common-man" getting a congressional seat due to the imposition of term limits.... because Congress will NEVER vote-in term limits for themselves, nor will they EVER vote-in the same healthcare system for themselves as we all have, nor the same pathetic "opportunity" to base the crux of THEIR retirement on the self-contribution of a measly $5000 a year, tax-deferred mind you, into a self-directed IRA as THEIR retirement plan, like we have.
      • Tess 6 mths ago
We already have term limits. It's called the voting booth.
    • Digital Vibe  •  Cicero, United States  •  6 mths ago
If you want change, then exercise your right and VOTE! The last presidential election saw a voter turn out of only 57%. Voter turn out hasn't been over 60% since 1968!
      • Red 6 mths ago
I don't care if there's a 100% turn out. It won't matter...because every contest is set up as Corrupt retardican retard A vs Bought off loser #$%$ B. Indies hardly ever win, so take your pick and know you have been duped in a political shell game. Same in the primaries with a few more choices and none of the "little people" get into the smoke-filled back rooms where all the corruption happens. The whole nest of rats of all political persuasions needs to go before reform and positive change can result.

Must be pretty bad for the occupy crowd if yahoo has to put up a story with comments from a week ago.
      • Red 6 mths ago
I was looking up blacklisted words and comment moderation because a lot of what I write gets blocked/disappeared and ran into a bunch of folks complaining about how yahoo drags up old comments and grafts them onto "new stories". This would be a good example here, as you noted, Steve. The story above says it's 7 hours old as I am typing, but I just looked and the oldest comments list as 2 weeks old. Very strange. But, why would that have anything to do with the Occupy movement one way or another? Most media have tried to ignore, downplay or discredit OWS and clones. From what I see matching your post against what yahoo did, maybe that's just another way to throw dirt. I wouldn't put anything past the 1%. Wait until the plutocrats get really desperate. All kinds of crap will be posted out here and called legit articles.

I like what some people say, these Occupiers should spend this time finding jobs. If they work pay taxes, this country would be better. If you don't like what this country is turning into. All you have to do is VOTE, that is how you change things in this country.
    • whocares  •  6 mths ago
Everyone says there inst a clear message in the OWS movement. How about "take the money out of politics", make that the number one message of the movement.
    • Yahoo user  •  6 mths ago
I have news for the Occupy LA idiots. They don't own the park they are squatting in and therefore the homeless have as much right to them as anyone.
    • Digital Vibe  •  Cicero, United States  •  6 mths ago
Having read a number of articles on this occupy Wall Street movement, I have yet to see anything on how the protesters themselves would solve this problem. I have to wonder, since they believe that our current system favors the rich over the poor, what would an OWS protester do, that was within their means, to help alleviate the problem? Simply put, what would OWSer's personally give up to help out?
    • Jack  •  6 mths ago
One would think "Occupy America" would follow the example of the "Arab Spring" and use social media to spread "The Message". All they are doing is disaffecting the rest of "us 99%" by trashing public parks. I stayed up all night following the eviction of the "Occupy Portland Movement" concerned about injuries and loss of life. I commend the way the eviction was handled. There were (THANKFULLY) very few injuries and no lives were lost on either side. In a time when the middle class cannot afford any additional taxes, who will end up paying for all the damages? It sure will not be the 1%!!

It's time to plan a million man march to Washington, D.C. How about in spring.
Why a million man march? Because all the problems lie at the hands of congressmen and senators. The ones who decided that they are allowed to change the laws in order to make it legal for them and them only, to play on Wall Street with no regulations, and with insider trading. Who are these people?? Aliens ? They are making themselves millionaires. All of this is illegal. They need to GET OUT !! All of them. WE need short term people up there.
Americans are not going to stand for this.

Civil disobedience: a group's refusal to obey a law because they believe the law is immoral
this is not civil disobedience. this is just a bunch of Progressives trying to over throw the American experiment of freedom.

      OK, now we're talking !

"The party's website lists a 10-point platform, with items including reversing the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision granting corporations the right to spend an unlimited amount of money on political campaigns, limiting the influence of lobbyists and prosecuting those responsible for the recent recession."

Who could possibly be against any of these points... that would undoubtedly make you Un-American !
