Leader of Christian Community in Israel Murdered by Man Dressed as Santa Claus

Israeli police say a man dressed as Santa Claus fatally stabbed Gabriel Cadis, the head of Jaffa’s Orthodox Church Association, in the back during a procession to mark Orthodox Christmas in the city of Jaffa.

The Associated Press reports that Cadis was stabbed Friday night and died hours later at a hospital. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said six members of an Arab Christian family were in custody Saturday as police investigate. Witnesses at the scene told police that the attacker was wearing the red-and-white Santa suit.

Israeli media reported that Cadis had a long-standing dispute with other Arab Christians in Jaffa. Haaretz reports that police are investigating whether the stabbing was connected to elections within the church association.

A funeral procession was held for Cadis in Jaffa on Saturday afternoon where The Jerusalem Post reports more than a thousand mourners joined on Yefet Street, including leaders from Christian and Muslim communities. According to The Post the procession was led by a large contingent of scouts who periodically stopped to play taps, ahead of a minivan carrying Cadis in an open-face casket.

Jaffa residents speaking with Haaretz described Cadis’ death as “an earthquake”.

Father Attala Hanna expresses the anguish and disgust that all decent human beings feel. The funeral was attended by Christians and Muslims who respected Gabi Cadis. What an insult to the entire Christian community, spoiling the Christmas celebration, causing grief to all.

Unfortunately, hate has a way of doing that. Thank you for your comments.

Sorry Jeff. But Burka is not religious dressing, is criminal dressing. My mother always has dressed veil but showing the face always enough. Anybody can recognize her any where. Never used capable assault banks masks, not like those criminals that are assaulting Banks and peoples fully hided under masks makingi impossible to identify who is inside the mask.
      • ann 4 mths ago
Are people robbing banks in burkas? I thought that burkas covering the face were traditional dress for extremist Muslim sects and popular in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. The burka has been described as used for protection against men other than a husband seeing a woman.
      • Leila 4 mths ago
Camilo has a point. Nowhere does the Quran specify the total swaddling of a woman so that it is impossible to tell who is under the burka. Maybe it works in isolated societies, but it is so easy to use as a disguise. Ban the burka! It is the devil's dress.

      Sargon,
Crazy people, criminals, religious extremists, savages, come from ALL races of people and religions. I MAKE NO EXCUSES FOR NONE OF THEM. We all answer to God.

Where I come from I can not put on a nice watch to go out , my hand could be cut off by criminals in order to steal my watch...they (this criminals) would called themselves Catholics

In your post, out of a country of 7.7 million people are Muslims; I can tell you that all 7.7 million are not killing other people.

No they are not killing, they are the "moderates", their silence is killing.

Silence can kill, and can kill millions it is the truth. BUT I CAN NOT BLAME PEOPLE FOR BEING AFRAID. Can you?

Those are all good points and counter points. Juan is right about how human nature is the cause for so much conflict and death - it has nothing to do with your race. But religion can be and sometimes is a factor that causes these events. The difference here is that Catholics are not taught by the Church to go out and steal watches etc... On the other hand, Muslims are basically taught "death to the infidels." Though, of course only small percentage of the population would actually go out and commit these atrocities. I don't often see stories in the news about Christians killing others for having different beliefs - the same cannot be said for Muslims. It is a good point about fear also - it is much easier to talk like a hero than to act like one. BUT, fear walks hand in hand with cowardice - for as long as this Jihad has been going on in modern times, by now, you would think more Muslims would face their fears and do what is right. You don't see People of other faiths blowing up Muslims for having different beliefs...

And before anybody says let's just do away with all religions - keep in mind that Nazism was an atheistic ideal as well as communism - and look how many atrocities were committed in such a short time under Nazi leader Hitler's rule and Communist leader Stalin's rule.

Bill...the orthodox church doesn't celebrate Christmas on the 25th, they celebrate it on Jan. 6. I think it's because they use an ancient calendar.
      • Mamai 4 mths ago
Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar, which makes Christmas about two weeks later than 25 December, 7 January for most Orthodox Julian calendar followers. That is true for all other holy days, which are about 13 days later, except Easter, e.g., Epiphany is 19 Jan and the Dormition is 28 August, etc. However, Greece, a mostly Orthodox nation, adopted the Gregorian calendar to be in step with the world, so Greece, land of origin of the Orthodox church, ironically celebrates Christmas 25 Dec. There are a few autonomous Greek churches that cling to the Julian calendar, as do the other Orthodox Christians in Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, etc. However, Easter, which is a movable feast, depending on the spring equinox, the full moon and, for the Orthodox, the date of Jewish Passover (Easter must fall after Passover for the Orthodox), is celebrated at the same time by all Orthodox Christians. By the way, Christmas will be celebrated on 8 Jan eventually since the Julian calendar is not as accurate as the Gregorian. What a mess!

I think it's all part of that whole twelve-days-of-Christmas thing.

Both Sargon Sawa and DaJudge have been posting the same comment:
"But who killed this Christian? An ARAB, right?"
Now they are talking to each other about it. Or is it a desperate Arab hater talking to himself?

On one memorable evening as a guest of the Bill Barker show in Denver, I was asked by a radio listener how the Indians celebrated Christmas before the coming of the whites. Bill and I broke out laughing and he had to punch in a commercial . . . ..

Jeff, the Arabs living in Israel would be deported in a New York minute if the Jews had their way. The only reason why they are there is because they are the ones who did not flee in 1948 and their progeny. Now while Israel can get away with not allowing any refugees to come back to their homes in what is now Israel, the Jews would face great censure if they were to get rid of the native Arabs who stayed behind on their own ancestral land.

      Sargon,
Just because a kingdom existed in antiquity does not mean it has the right to exist in the present and if, in the rarest of occasions, it does exist in the present it doesn’t have to have the same identical borders as it did in antiquity. There are some examples of this.

      Terrence,
You clearly have never actually spoken to Jews from Iran. Yes, there are a few synagogues. Jews are tolerated as long as they keep quiet and show no outward signs of being Jewish. Also, every once in a while, groups of Jews are arrested and left to languish in prison. Jews in Iran live in constant fear of violence and imprisonment. Tell the truth and don't try to whitewash Iran.

Israel was not created in 1947. By 1947, Israel already was a functioning country with a language, culture, agriculture, universities, newspapers and military forces which proved capable of defending against the armies of several Arab nations.

The only thing that happened after the Holocaust was a UN vote in 1947 for a partition plan that was never implemented because the Arab world instead chose to try and destroy Israel.

The "European Imperialist Colonialists" whom the Muslims of the Middle East pretend to despise, are they themselves are nothing more than another generation of the same thing.

These same "European Imperialist Colonialists" turned most of the Middle East into Arab Muslim states, creating artificial countries such as Egypt, Syria and Jordan, the latter ruled by a failed Saudi royal family, named after historical nations.

Yet somehow none of the Islamic history revisionist and activists object to any of these countries, they object only to Israel.

Somehow condemning the Kurds, Assyrian Christians, Copts and the region's numerous other minorities to be ruled by intolerant Arab rulers is perfectly acceptable in their book.

It has a name. It`s called Jihad.

In 1948 Arabs refugees in Israel were encouraged to leave Israel by ARAB LEADERS PROMISING TO PURGE THE LAND OF THE JEWS.
That meant to eradicate Jews and destroy Israel. Sixty-eight percent left without ever seeing an Israeli soldier.
We all remember that the six Arab countries declared war 5 times on Israel and lost all those 5 wars.
The Jews were forced to flee from Arab lands due to Arab BRUTALITY, PERSECUTION AND POGROMS.
THE SAME THING HAPPENING TO CHRISTIANS TODAY IN ARAB COUNTRIES.

Stabbing a Christian is Islamic. Dressing for the occasion as Santa Claus is an Islamic novelty.
