At Least Six Dead Following Tornadoes in the Midwest
A fast-moving storm in the Midwest on Sunday left at least six people dead after dozens of tornadoes touched down across the region. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for areas of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. Officials believe that at least 77 tornadoes formed during the storm, with the majority of them in Illinois, where all five of the confirmed fatalities also occurred. Thousands more were affected by power outages.
In Washington, Ill., one of the hardest-hit towns, a 6 p.m. curfew was enacted, and the National Guard dispatched ten firefighters and three vehicles to help with the recovery. By the time it hit Chicago, the storm was milder, but officials still had to evacuate Soldier Field, where the Bears were facing the Ravens. A utility company in Missouri reported that 35,000 customers in the St. Louis area had lost power. In Michigan, that number was at least 390,000.
