Leisure centres to close for renewable heating work

Three public buildings are due to close to allow a renewable heating system to be installed.

Stratford Park Leisure Centre in Stroud will close from 13 May until 24 May, while The Pulse in Dursley will close on 16 May and 17 May.

Meanwhile, The Museum in the Park in Stroud will be closed from 14 May until 17 May, and also on 24 May.

Ageing gas boilers will be replaced by renewable heating systems in the £5m project.

'Considerable disruption'

Most of the work across the buildings has happened behind-the-scenes, with no impact to visitors.

But residents will not be able to make use of the facilities at various points over the coming weeks as the final phase will cause "considerable disruption" to public areas due to the loss of mains power.

However, the closures have been coordinated to ensure at least one leisure centre will be open everyday, with swimming, exercise and gym classes.

There are public transport links between Stroud and Dursley with buses 65 (Stagecoach) and 65a (Cotswold Green) travelling between the two towns daily from Monday to Saturday.

Members of the leisure centres and museum were contacted about the closures.

During the closure of Museum in the Park, areas of museum work often hidden from visitors will be revealed in a series of daily social media posts.

Stroud District Council said, once complete, the project will save "tonnes of carbon emissions every year" from the three buildings.

It is also hoped the installation of the heating system will enable the council to become carbon neutral by 2030.
