Leonardo DiCaprio's climate change activism is widely known, given his Oscar acceptance speech and philanthropic work on the issue.

Now he's using his stardom to illuminate climate change through the medium he knows best: film.

A new climate change documentary Before the Flood follows the actor around the world exploring global warming's impacts and solutions. It is aimed at being a more uplifting, globe-trotting version of Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which was released in 2007.

The movie, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens, will air on National Geographic channels in 171 countries and 45 languages, the network said in a press release.

It will also be made available for free across a wide array of digital and social platforms for a full week, from Oct. 30 through Nov. 6. This includes Natgeotv.com, Apple TV, Roku, iTunes, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Sony PlayStation, GooglePlay and more.

DiCaprio and Nat Geo said the worldwide, multi-platform release is motivated in part to get the film out before the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8.

“There is no greater threat to the future of our society than climate change, and it must be a top issue for voters this election season,” said DiCaprio, in a press release.
