Let's All Politicize High Gas Prices

Let's All Politicize High Gas Prices

In case you haven't noticed, gas prices are pushing $4 a gallon and since it's an election year, the burdensome price at the pump makes for excellent campaign trail fodder. Never mind that, per the Associated Press, "economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices," it's always someone's fault. Here are the lamest talking points we've seen on the stump so far:

RELATED: Gas Prices Taking Their Toll on Obama

Allan West  In an astonishingly irony-free statement Thursday, Florida Congressman Allen West blasted President Obama for the steep cost of filling up his 2008 Hummer SUV. "Here is the bottom line, last night it took 70 dollars to fill the tank of my 2008 H3 Hummer," West said.  "What is it costing you? What does it cost the president to fill his gas tank?” Congressman, you drive a monstrous combat vehicle that gets 15 mpg, that's why it costs a lot at the pump.

Newt Gingrich The unachievable election-year promise. Everyone makes them. But some are so nakedly unlikely it's a surprise they're delivered with a straight face, like Newt Gingrich's promise to bring the cost of gas down to $2.50. “Americans have every right to demand $2.50 gas — we are an oil-rich country,” the former House speaker told conservative magazine Newsmax. “My plan will have the price of gasoline at $2.50 a gallon so that Americans aren’t penalized every time they go to the pump.” Essentially, the plan boils down to developing offshore drilling, authorizing the development of federal lands for drilling and signing an executive order to green light the Keystone pipeline. $2.50, here we come.

The RNC For the Republican National Committee, correlation = causation. Also, Obama shouldn't be singing the blues. Enough said:

RELATED: Newt Gingrich Isn't Sorry for Anything

RELATED: Neither Obama Nor Newt Initially Took Newt's Candidacy Seriously

Rick Santorum  Campaigning in Ohio, Rick Santorum blamed the high gas prices on "the president's mismanagement of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East." This is coming from the guy who says he'd bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. I think we all know how gas prices would be affected by that.

President Obama With all these wonderfully spurious attacks on the president, there's no reason for him to invent what Republicans are saying. But on the stump, he thinks he found a rhetorical winner in this little number describing the GOP's "three-point plan." “Step one is to drill, and step two is to drill, and step three is to keep drilling." That's the best you can do?

Build Refineries, we have not constructed a refinery in this country since the early 80s. Drill baby drill is worthless without refineries. Forget the handful of people who are always against everything. It should not take 10 years to build a refinery put pressure on politicians to get it done or vote them out. It will also create JOBS.
      • Mike M 3 mths ago
It's much cheaper to shut them down for maintenance all the time and manufacture shortages, so that prices can continue to go up....... until their man is in the White House!
      • Randy 3 mths ago
I think people don't understand the root cause of the problem. More refineries would produce more gasoline, certainly, but domestic consumption of gasoline continues to decline year after year, and while 50% of the crude oil used in the US comes from domestic sources you would think that should have a stabilizing price on the price of gasoline. Any excess production of gasoline would be sold overseas at the same high price. In 1983, commodities trading began on crude oil, prior to that the price was set in true capitalist fashion by the producer. OPEC formed a cartel of many of the oil producing states and would try to mainatin a sustainable price/output for the crude, with prices sometimes rising as high as $30/barrel. Once traders began gambling, they could in essence control the price of crude to increase their wealth. The price of crude oil is no longer a matter of supply and demand, and the oil companies continue to post record profits year after year, because they don't sell their domestic crude for the cost of producing it, they sell it at the inflated price that they have induced in the market. I would venture to guess, that the most active traders in the crude oil commodities market is not Joe sixpack, but shell companies fronting for the multinational oil companies.

T.Boone Pickens the Texan Oilman,, on 60 Minutes, alluded to the fact that it takes 40 years for a refinery to break even and start to make a profit.... and one hasn't been built since 1976 ..... then he told us to do the math. It's #$%$ near over and dry... but no one can say that. It would and will cause chaos.Curiously he has turned to electric and wind generators.... funny thing to do for an Oilman who has made Billions on oil.

Funny how 4 years ago, high gas prices was GWB's fault, but now, the media says that you can't blame the president... Well, its really not funny, but it is worth noting...
      • Sandy 3 mths ago
The media can say anything they want. I didn't blame George Bush and I don't
blame Obama for oil prices. A lot of people do anyway.
      • I am Godzilla 3 mths ago
Bushie said the same thing as Obama, I have little control over oil prices.
      • J Urban 3 mths ago
BOTH HAD CONTROL, IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE COST.
    • Big_E_BigShot  •  Burlington, Vermont  •  3 mths ago
Oil prices are not set by the oil countries, they are set by the speculators and traders. The US government needs to step in an change the way oil is traded, way too many hands in the cookie jar between the oil being pumped out of the ground to it being pumped into your car. The way the system works now is pretty much the same way a drug cartel operates.

The DOE is the agency that approves the export of our resources in the energy area.. Who do they give the insider information to???
      • BIG 3 mths ago
government involvment only increases prices...the government doesnt need to step in...the need to get out...name one thing that the government has been able to do cheaper than the private sector...government regulations have doubled the cost of an auto in the past 20 years...if the government steps in with more regulations, then gas will be $8 per gallon...the only way to lower the cost of anything is to increase supply. if you own the only Micheal Jordan rookie card, it would be worth a bunch of money however if over a million were produced it wouldnt be worth anything...drill here drill there drill everyfreakinwhere!

Somebody is sitting back waiting for termoil in the Middle East so they can cash in at the expense of the American people. This is crony capitalism in its purest form.

Of course we can't. You go buy a Prius, and some other jerk will go out and buy a Chevy Tahoe to compensate. Next time you see one of those, go thank him for the $4 gas.

One wonders whether this article, with this tone, would have been written with a Republican in the White House when gas prices were on the rise. It IS true that the President cannot directly affect the price of a gallon of gas. That's a market function that the politicians can do very little about. But with a Republican in the White House it is highly doubtful that the mainstream media would be reminding us of that fact. Instead it would be ALL about failed policy and disconnect with the public, etc.... go back and read news items 6 or 7 years ago on this subject, you'll see what I mean.

I don't know much about politics related gas prices, but I do know that during those $1 and below gas era, there's about maybe $40-$50 billions speculating on Oil and now we have about $500-$1000billions or more speculating on Oil. I guess all those billions of dollars got nothing to do with driving the price up!

"Let's All Politicize High Gas Prices" ?

Might as well, since the same thing was Done during Bush's re-election campaign.... ZING!!!
    • Chris  •  3 mths ago
The corporate politicians WANT 40 billion dollars a year in taxpayer subsidies to go to the oil companies so the oil companies will give them money. We need government reform! Bad!
    • sam b  •  3 mths ago
I am sure that the editors and writers over at The Atlantic are smart enuf to understand and describe the true debacle of higher gas prices:
In other less developed countries, people have their food supplies restricted by corrupt politics and crime gangs...............this leads to Food Riots! ie.....look at the Middle East..............it all boils down to .............We're starving!!!
Yes, Arab Islamicists use starving masses to their political advantage..........but the root cause remains the same............we're starving!!!
In USA............we are more dependent on Gas than we are on food...............for now.
When Gas supplies get restricted by corrupt politics and, yes, crime gangs(oil oligarchs).......expect RIOTS. $5 gas will put the price of everything out of reach, food, jobs, schools, you name it...........
    • clifton  •  3 mths ago
Whazzamatter? Libs can do it when Bush is up for re-election but not when Obama is up for re-election? LOL. Well guess what? It's gonna happen.
    • Tom S  •  3 mths ago
How come only a Democratic president cannot affect gasoline prices? That's not what the press says during ANY Republican administration.

      Kinda biased reporting AGAIN!

we should post some of the old news clips when gas went up while W was in office, the propaganda mills worked on the prices 24/7 then

Don't we go through this in every presidential election cycle? Why can't we just admit it, deal with it or not; but spare me the #$%$ speeches?

White House Played Politics with Drilling Ban!

The White House rewrote crucial sections of an Interior Department report to suggest an independent group of scientists and engineers supported a six-month ban on offshore oil drilling, the Interior inspector general says in a new report.

In the wee hours of the morning of May 27, a staff member to White House energy adviser Carol Browner sent two edited versions of the department report's executive summary back to Interior. The language had been changed to insinuate the seven-member panel of outside experts - who reviewed a draft of various safety recommendations - endorsed the moratorium, according to the IG report obtained by POLITICO.

"The White House edit of the original DOI draft executive summary led to the implication that the moratorium recommendation had been peer-reviewed by the experts," the IG report states, without judgment on whether the change was an intentional attempt to mislead the public.

The six-month ban on offshore drilling installed in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill became a major political issue over the summer, as Gulf State lawmakers and industry groups charged the White House with unfairly threatening thousands of jobs. House Republicans have said they plan on investigating the circumstances surrounding the moratorium when they take power next year.

The reserves are full, we're producing more oil now than at any time in the last 10 years and demand is down due to the recession. The current price of oil has little to do with supply and demand fundamentals and everything to do with speculators and commodities traders jacking up the price in Wall Street's latest fantasy finance casino game. All they need is a projected harsh winter or an embargo somewhere in the Middle-East and the manipulations begins. This has grown from a 10 billion to over a 300 billion dollar industry in less than 10 years. A provision of the Dodd-Frank Act is intended to curtail the amount of non-end user positions on oil futures, but the Republicans are stonewalling it by blocking the appointment of anyone Obama has selected to head the commission created to oversee the regulations; meanwhile sending Boehner and Canter out on a PR mission to coddle the industry execs and assure them they will either defund or repeal it as soon as they can buy or coerce the votes. Then they take the stage and tell everyone our real top priorities are the need to cut medicare benefits and protect religious liberty.
