Libyan fighters assault main Gadhafi base in Sirte

SIRTE, Libya (AP) — Revolutionary fighters on Friday assaulted a convention center in the heart of Sirte that forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi turned into their main base, in what commanders said was a final offensive to crush resistance in the holdout city after weeks of siege.

The forces of Libya's new rulers were pushing into the Mediterranean coastal city from the west, east and south in heavy fighting, trying to squeeze Gadhafi loyalists into a smaller and smaller perimeter. The two sides battered each other with rockets, mortar shells and tank fire, as Gadhafi snipers fired down on fighters advancing through housing complexes. Friday's push marks the largest new assault on the city for weeks.

Smoke drifted over the skyline and explosions thundered throughout the city, as long lines of residents fleeing by car formed at revolutionary forces' checkpoints.

Fighters entering through the western gate quickly advanced to within just a mile (two kilometers) of the city center but faced heavy resistance from a loyalist force of roughly 800 men, according to one commander's estimate.

"We started the attack at 6 a.m. today. The first group hit the outskirts of Sirte. We were fired on by Gadhafi snipers. We had many soldiers wounded," said commander Altaib Aleroebi of the ex-rebels' West Mountain Brigade, which led the attack on the western front.

At least 12 revolutionary fighters were killed and 195 were wounded, doctors said. Ambulances sped down Sirte's main avenue to a field hospital set up in an abandoned villa five miles (eight kilometers) from the center. Doctors said a senior commander, Ali Saeh of the Free Libya Brigade, was injured, shot twice by a sniper as he led fighters through loyalist forces in a residential area.

"We are receiving many gunshot wounds, mostly to the head, neck and chest from sniper fire. We have received many injured today," Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Tantoun said Friday, adding he expects many more injured fighters to arrive through the day as fighting intensifies.

Sirte, Gadhafi's home city, is considered the most crucial of the areas that remain in the hands of supporters of the former Libyan leader, more than a month after revolutionaries swept into Tripoli and ousted him from power.

Leaders of the interim government have said that once Sirte falls they can start a timetable for elections. Sirte is key to the physical unity of the country, since it lies roughly in the center of the coastal plain where the majority of Libya's 6.5 million people live, blocking the easiest routes between east and west. Gadhafi loyalists, however, still control another major city, Bani Walid, in the central mountains, and Sabha deep in the deserts of the south.

Revolutionary fighters have been besieging Sirte for three weeks, facing grueling resistance as they inched their way in, let residents flee and simultaneously moved to encircle the city before the final assault. Gadhafi's loyalists have been barricaded in the Ouagadougou Center, a grandiose conference hall that Gadhafi built in the city to host international summits. From there they have been able to dominate the defense of surrounding residential areas.

As the attack continued, civilians fled the besieged city, which is suffering shortages of food and other essentials. Former rebel fighters checked the contents of their bags and cars.

"We had to go today ... there is nothing left, no food, no gasoline," said Sirte resident Ahmed Mohammed.

U.N. envoy Ian Martin appealed to both sides to respect human rights and look ahead to national reconciliation.

He urged the forces of Libya's new leaders not to take revenge on those accused of war crimes, saying they should be detained and brought to justice.

"This will lay the foundation for national reconciliation and the future unity of the people of Libya," he said.

Deputy defense minister in the transitional government, Fawzi Bukatif, told The Associated Press on Friday that revolutionary forces were poised to enter the city from all fronts in what he called a final attack on Sirte.

Revolutionary fighters launched an assault on the convention center in the morning Friday, said Aleroebi, who commanded fighters who led the attack. Backed by rocket and tank fire, they pushed into the city, facing heavy machine gun and sniper fire, he said. The fighters drove loyalists back from a wall near the Ouagadougou Center, he said.

Fighting was also going on around a Gadhafi palace complex and Green Square, the public plaza at the center of Sirte, between the convention center and the sea, commanders said.

When is this uprising going to end? It began from days to weeks and to months. I hope it doesn't go to years and decades as we see in Afghanistan.

That is why the West is bombing everything in sight; so they will have the freshest start. Also... the more they bomb... the more they will have to trade in goods for oil in the rebuilding. It's a real win for the world; since they are employed making armament and later the western factorizes will be selling to build the cities. New found freedom on western ideals will mean a doubling of goods since women are natural shoppers. Goods for cities. Weapons for the new military; which usually means selling them the stuff we wore out in a package deal. The only way we could lose... is if the new government signs deals to buy strictly from the SCO. This would be a huge loss for the west. Since democracy installs leaders it wants and removes those it does not want..... the plan should work. Iraq was a bit of an exception to the rule. To many countries felt sorry for what we allowed; and got involved. This meant other countries benefited; more than we had imagined. Like China in Iraq and Afghanistan. The world is intentionally aligning everything Chinese... because they will be able to afford the new world police. We have been bankrupted and the world still needs police. Thus the move to those that have; instead of those that are broke. Except America to still able to manufacture weapons and participate, but on a smaller scale as others pick up the slack. I fully expect more Chinese contracts here for resources as a result. We'll see what happens.

The only noise I want to hear about the middle east is our ships, planes, tanks and personnel roaring home where they can defend our borders.

Let the desert dwellers deal with their own problems. We have all the resources we need to fuel an economic recovery right here.

Sirte is the modern day Leningrad, and may history show , that just as in WW11 it is the turning point against the new nazis, first in lLibya, then NATO and finally, the same as Nazi Berlin, The U.S. center of Imperialism.

When does the UN "humanitarian air support" mandate end? If Gadhafi forces survive that long it should be interesting then.

There is no time limit on operations, Only Obama bases military operations on election cycles.

And the military budget. Tax payers need to transfer wealth to weapons merchants including those who sell to the Pentagon and Nato. Who cares about the economy?
      • Joe 7 mths ago
Yahoo, it's a job's bill, you have to replace the weapons and anyone killed is one less person looking for a job so unemployment rate goes down.

and who is helping the civilians now?????????
      • Ron 7 mths ago
Certainly not Ghaddafi's men, who, according to an eyewitness, deny medical care at the Sirte hospital to civilians who do not belong to Ghaddafi's tribe.
      • ANDY L 7 mths ago
        obviously not NATO.
      • Dan 7 mths ago
Who cares about civilians ... this is about getting rid of a dictator without actually saying so. Getting rid of dictators by the usual means has a lasting effect on the country which conducts it. This way people blame NATO and NATO alone and well ... blaming NATO gets absolutely nothing accomplished because it doesn't have a face to specify your anger against, haha.

Is Australia in the North Atlantic, or did they apply for membership in NATO? NATO is an acronym (the initials stand for words in the organization name), meaning North Atlantic Treaty Organization....

If the "rebels" keep it up it will end soon. When they were trying to take Sirte, they came in from the west, and from the east. Guess what? They shot each other. If it wasn't for NATO and the US, well you know what would have happened.

After six weeks of NTC failure to capture Sirte, NTC/NATO gave today as the deadline for taking the whole city. We shall see.

The disastrous situation of the Libyan cities of Sirte and Bani Walid, which are facing genocide as well as the widespread devastation of their infrastructures.

The situation is deteriorating badly with every day and every hour that passes in Sirte and Bani Walid as these two major cities have been held under siege for months and their citizens are suffering critically from a lack of basic necessities. NATO and the Rebels are
bombing civilian areas, killing innocent people and families, destroying homes, hospitals, schools, hotels and public buildings (the links below demonstrate a number of cases).

What we have seen in some residential areas of Sirte, such as the No. 2 area and the Aljeaza area which have been attacked and bombed by NATO and the Rebels numerous times, could constitute crimes against humanity: the total destruction of homes, victims who are mostly children, elderly people and women, who have committed no sin but simply want to live in peace in their homeland. Even those who have attempted to leave the cities have been mistreated and abused by the Rebels of the National Transitional Council who act in revenge and search for displaced people at the gates, often refusing to allow them to leave and denying them passage because of their title, tribal affiliation or connection with the government.

The humanitarian situation in the city of Sirte is tragic and extremely dire. Sick and injured people, pregnant women and victims of the bombings do not have access to the hospital and medical assistance due to a lack of fuel for their vehicles and even if they were able reach help, they face a tragic lack of medication, medical equipment and oxygen. The hospital is crowded, full of serious and critical cases and many pregnant women have had to deliver babies in their homes; this has lead to complications that have caused increases in deaths among mothers and infants. A scarcity of oxygen and a lack of medical materials necessary for operations and cesarean sections have even endangered the lives of those who have been fortunate enough to reach the hospital.

The hospital in Sirte is in a very miserable state of affairs. Added to the lack of basic equipment and medicine, the hospital is suffering from a severe shortage of fuel that is vital for generating the electricity needed to operate essential medical machinery and devices.

The intense bombardment of the city and the destruction of its infrastructure by NATO and the Rebels, the situation has become catastrophic. All sewage works and soiled water networks throughout the city have been destroyed and are fuelling the spread of epidemics and disease, especially in densely populated areas.

The prospect of starvation and severe malnourishment is now on the horizon with grave shortages in basic foodstuffs, especially baby formula and clean drinking water.

Well according to another cite 47 dead dead, and over 200 wounded. Now by night it will be 200 dead and 50 wounded. Just mere fact. Article states most shots were HEAD, NECK and CHEST. How many people do you think survive those wounds by professional Snipers. Did you know the world record in confirmed kills is over 1000 kills. I think the rate these Libyans are sniping they will pass. Any more major attacks like this by Rebels they will be out of men before they know it. Tonight you will hear that Gaddafi troops will counter attack and push the rebels back even more. The mere fact is Sirte is very important for the rebels for Tripoli was not the capital for Gaddafi. They have lost a lot of ground to Gaddafi in many cities and part of Trippoli again but they don't care and the media will not report that. Well the media did slip today. Before they stated Sabha was taken over and today they slipped and said it is a stronghold. The reason why you don't hear about Sabha and Bani Walid and many others is because there is barely any rebels left over there, they have all been sent to Sirte. The reason why so many other cities have fallen to Gaddafi also is because forces have been taken out and sent to Sirte making all the other lines week thus being taken over. At the same times Gaddafi is sending men to Sirte also for he knows these lands better then the rebels. Even the Rebels addmitted that. By the time Sirte has a chance of being taken over Rebels will have no cities left. Thier Supply lines are cut off, many rebels have deserted in many fronts. Bani Walid Gaddafi is sending over 1000 men to help Sirte in Defense. Sabha has close to 5,000 coming but when these forces come they come in groups of 20-30 so they don't get bombed. No one does a airrade on small units for you can't see them. This war will be going on for a long time and the minute NATO pulls out rebels will run faster then the wind.

These so called freedom fighters are so full of there own propaganda. They want to make it like they are true hero's fighting this highly trained enemy. From the article they say they are being hit by heavy sniper fire from all over. The shots are mostly to the head ,chest, neck. If this were the case and the standard round these guys use for their multiple small arms is a 7.62 round. They have only 12 dead and 195 wounded. So my guess is they are using BB guns are "Q" men are not such good shots. With 800 men as mentioned if you had only 20 snipers you would have a MUCH higher kill ratio. In this sort of all out attack with 20 high trained snipers it would be 195dead and 12 wounded. They are fighting old men an mothers as they have killed many of the city people with indiscriminate bombing by a pitiful NATO force that could not do a thing if not for the US backing. They have run out of bombs. The have no intellegence gathering aircraft or just no intelligence. For all this war has done to the world wide economy it would have been better of to have left "Q" alone an the whole thing would have been over 5 months ago. We would not be paying still .75 more per gallon down from $1.50 and then the pass through cost to our fodd and cost go on for what. He had helped us in war on terror and was no longer a threat. Now with him gone all Europe and the West will see the new threat as was the 70-80's when there were over 150 terrorist training camps in Libya. Now will be a whole country. great foriegn policy guys. When will you ever learn. In truth you have as this is exactly what you want. We just don't sit with our thumbs in our but without knowing the end game. They have one and it is not is the people they are sworn to protects interest.

Libyan cities of Sirte, Bani Walid and Sabha have some of the bravest people in the world. They're fighting against US/NATO and terrorist rebels and the corrupted media.
