Libyan forces besiege Gadhafi's hometown Sirte

SIRTE, Libya (AP) — Libya's revolutionary fighters stepped up a siege of Moammar Gadhafi's hometown on Sunday, hoping to wear down loyalist forces a day after an offensive failed to dislodge die-hard loyalists of the fugitive leader.

Anti-Gadhafi fighters set up new checkpoints and posted snipers in strategic areas on the outskirts of Sirte. But they said they were not planning another assault immediately after facing fierce resistance on Saturday that left seven of their comrades dead and more than 150 wounded.

"It's unlikely we'll attack today unless we are attacked," said Aiman Majub, who helps coordinate revolutionary forces. "The idea is to catch our breath and regroup so we can be more strategic instead of blasting our way in."

Saturday's battle for downtown Sirte was the first significant push in a week and included close-range gunfights with loyalists hiding in apartment buildings and throwing hand grenades from windows. The fighters pushed east along the city's main thoroughfare into its urban center, overrunning a TV station as NATO warplanes supporting anti-Gadhafi forces roared overhead.

Osama Nuttawa al-Swehli, a revolutionary logistics officer, said the goal on Sunday was to squeeze the city and prevent any former regime figures believed to be holed up inside from escaping. Al-Swehli said he has heard Gadhafi's son Muatassim communicating by radio with loyalist forces inside Sirte.

"We have to make sure that no supplies get in and that none of their assets escape," he said.

"The priority today is to hold our positions while pounding their targets," he said, adding that they needed to take out loyalist rocket launchers before making another push to take the city.

He said that seven men were killed and 152 wounded, 17 seriously, in Saturday's fighting. Four of those injured lost limbs and four others had serious head wounds, he said.

Sirte, 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli on the Mediterranean coast, is the Libyan city most associated with Gadhafi and one of three strongholds that have refused to surrender more than a month after revolutionary forces seized Tripoli and much of the rest of the North African nation.

Revolutionary forces have been working to help civilians trying to flee the city amid rapidly deteriorating living conditions. More than a dozen families drove out toward the west Sunday morning, riding in battered cars with mattresses and suitcases strapped to their roofs.

Al-Swehli said he thinks most of the families who intend to flee have already left the city. It remains unclear how many civilians remain inside the city and if they are helping loyalist forces.

What an absolute joke the UN and NATO have become.
In what sort of fantasy land does the bombing of civilians in Sirte become "protecting civilians" ?
The only civilians that now NEED protection are those under attack by NATO bombs and rebel forces !
The media and UN are just a disgraceful insult to the intelligence of thinking human beings.

By the time US& UK going and attacked Iraq, U.N , NATO & ICC they were not talking even to protect Iraq people.
Alot of people lost their life.
Why they're talking and taking part now?
        And in wrong way!

The only way to take Sirte is to bomb and flatten it and then the rebels can go in and claim victory...hail NATO

the reason for this fight is oil and money , no need of humanity, as terrorist are bombing a peaceful nation. as they dont need peace in any part of third world. if there peace in the thirld world small countries how can they SELL THEIR ARMS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. how can they capture oil to run their arms making factories. and with out arms how the death will dance in the world.

Another day, same headlines. It's like "Groundhog Day".
When did NATO become the Libyan "rebels" Air Force?
      • Mladen 8 mths ago
Since they were assigned to protect civilians. Bomb in the head protects best from any further harm and that's what they do in Sirte.

7 dead and 150 wounded, that what happens when you fight against professional soldiers. higly discipline, and that love their country, either it is right or wrong, professional soldiers that don't waste their ammo firing up in the air. but use every single bullet against the enemy.
i admire the rebels that stood against gaddafi, but they got a long way to learn.

Where is Gaddafi? Freedom fighters think that he is in Sirte, but where? To capture him thousands are loosing their lives and the whole city is grounded. After that if they find that he is not there, then the next will be to ground another city or kill more?????? What has happened to the NATO intellegence????? Real pity

@“Libya's revolutionary fighters stepped up a siege of Moammar Gadhafi's hometown on Sunday, hoping to wear down loyalist forces a day after an offensive failed to dislodge die-hard loyalists of the fugitive leader." ….
Well, another deadline passes, followed by another full-scale assault aided by NATO bombers, with the result being another humiliating defeat for the NATO Terrorist Council (NTC) fighters (aka anti-Gaddafi forces or former rebels) at the hands of the gallant Anti-NATO Liberation Army (formerly known as pro-Gaddafi forces or Gaddafi Loyalists) led by Muammar of Libya. Gaddafi’s defiant stand for the last few weeks against Western aggression and its puppet regime could shape Libya’s future in the interim for it surely has galvanized jihadists, Islamists, and freedom fighters from Africa, Arabia, right up to Afghanistan who are probably already on their way to Libya to rid it of the Western infidels. I know the following is like crying over spilled milk but the West should have never interfered MILITARILY. Long live Muammar of Libya! Long live Muammar the King! Long live Anti-NATO Liberation Army! Short live Obama to Jan 2013!

ok so its "revolutionary fighters" (not insurgents) taking on "die hard loyalists" huh?
In America, we call our die hard loyalists "patriots" and revolutionary fighters "terrorists"
what can I say, the power of biased perspective.

To people over there, you must think twice before you comment on this headline. We rebels/former rebels/former fighters/anti Gadhafi fighters/revolutionary fighters/revolutionary forces of Libya have retreated from the town centre of Sirte to make a more strategic siege of Gadhafi home town. We are a well organised force and intend to make another go-back as soon as it is o'k with nato.
      • Benny 8 mths ago
        can you believe this.
    • Benny  •  8 mths ago
Yesterday, they said Sirte was going to fall. The rebels get their behinds kicked and cry for NATO to start bombing. Looks like the only direction these rebels can shoot is straight up in celebrating they have not made any headway against the loyalist positions.
    • Farmer  •  8 mths ago
Perhaps, NATO warplanes should no longer participate. Sirte and BaniWalid is now become domestic situation. They have Tripoli, Benghazi and other parts already. Let them live in peace, just leave them.
    • Titit  •  8 mths ago
There must be a lot more Gadhaffi loyalists than we were led to believe. Months of NATO bombings failed to take over the country. The rebels rats are nothing but a whole bunch of sissy gays and transexuals muzzi. I would not be surprised if one day they realize that NATO is their real enemy.

The gorilla war has just begun = another Iraqi fiasco = Oil
If the 'rebels' are not winning and Libya is far from secure.

"Abdel-Rahman Busin, said it was an accident caused by either an electrical problem or the improper storage of ammunition." True... you never store ammunition close to wired electrical detonator. One button push and all goes to smithereens.

Has MG outsourced his propaganda machine to China. It seems like the PRC Ministry of Propaganda are looking for a few extra 50 cent payments. Apparently the Rebels have not yet agreed to stick with MG's oil deals with the Chinese and some PRC guys are very uncomfortable. Never a dull moment with you guys.

Notice how the media has changed the name from lybian rebels to libya's revolutionary forces. The media will continue to hide the fact that they are the terrorist muz brotherhood and a true enemy of the U S and her citizens.Pathetic.

God is Great!!! These thugs got the right treatment Saturday as they fought Gadhafi boys in Sirte. Ron had fooled them that it is clear over there only to drink it hot. Now Al-Swehli has turned his anger to civilians and he is calling his nato killers bomb civilians saying that nato is free to bomb whichever family has not left Sirte. The Col. should give civilians a deadline if he really cares anyway.
