Libyan forces seize most of Bani Walid

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libyan revolutionary forces have captured almost all of Bani Walid, one of Moammar Gadhafi's last remaining strongholds, but still face pockets of resistance as they try to end a weeks-long standoff, officials said Monday.

Fierce resistance in Bani Walid and Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte has prevented Libya's new leaders from declaring full victory and setting a timeline for elections. It has been more than two months since the former rebels gained control of the rest of the oil-rich North African nation.

In a step toward normalcy, the transitional leadership council confirmed it has signed an agreement with NATO that partially lifts the no-fly zone imposed in March over the country, allowing resumption of some flights without seeking NATO approval. The embargo was imposed as part of the U.N. Security Council resolution that authorized airstrikes to protect civilians from Gadhafi's regime.

Anwar Elfeitori, the minister of transportation and communications, said the agreement signed Thursday in Malta will make it easier to transport wounded fighters from the front lines for treatment.

"The partial lifting of the air embargo will help with the transportation of the casualties, which is the No. 1 priority at this time, as well as facilitate the movement of people between Libya and the rest of the world," Elfeitori told The Associated Press in an interview.

He said the agreement only applies to specific routes and altitudes for humanitarian flights but is designed so it can be amended to include other areas as security conditions allow.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the revolutionary council fighters are making progress. He called on pro-Gadhafi forces "to lay down their weapons and join the new Libya."

NATO officials have expressed surprise at the persistence of Gadhafi's supporters. Libyans believe the heavy resistance signals some of Gadhafi's sons and other high-level regime figures are hiding in the areas.

Fighters in Bani Walid, which has proven particularly hard to capture because of its difficult terrain, said they have entered the city center for the first time but still were fighting Gadhafi supporters in surrounding villages.

"We liberated the city around sunset on Sunday and raised the revolutionary flags all over the city," field commander Abdel-Salam Genouna told The Associated Press. He said fighters had occupied the central marketplace, the hospital, the hotel and an old fort that had all been used as bases for Gadhafi loyalists.

"We are patrolling the neighborhoods because there are still some scuffles, but otherwise it is completely under our control," he said, adding revolutionaries also had control of a steep valley called Wadi Zeitoun that had been a sniper base for Gadhafi's forces.

"Our forces are everywhere inside the city, and we are protecting the few families we found inside," he said.

He said fighters from Sabratha, Tripoli and Bani Walid were involved in the operation.

Col. Ahmed Bani, a military spokesman in Tripoli, said revolutionary forces had control over more than 90 percent of the city. He said revolutionary forces had suffered heavy casualties but declined to give a number.

Residents and fighters said that Gadhafi forces retreated in the face of the advance over the past two days.

Moammar al-Warfali, a doctor in Bani Walid, said fighters loyal to the new transitional government seized the center, a key hospital and several other high buildings used by Gadhafi's snipers to prevent any advance by the revolutionary fighters.

He also said Gadhafi's son Seif al-Islam had been seen in the city as recently as last week.

NATO has pledged to continue airstrikes for as long as necessary, saying pro-Gadhafi forces continue to pose a threat to civilians in Libya.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague also pledged more humanitarian and financial support Monday during a visit to Tripoli.

"Libyan forces seize most of Bani Walid" I like how they just say Libyan as if Bani Walid wasn't already held by Libyans. I guess is sounds better than NATO backed militants seize most of Bani Walid from Gaddafi backed millitants

As the battle for control of the last Gadhafi outposts continues, the U.N. human rights office expressed concern about the number of prisoners in Libya and their treatment.
"It could be up to 7,000," said Mona Rishmawi, a senior official with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. "At this stage, there is no police infrastructure, there is no prison authorities. ... Right now, the Justice Ministry is not fully functional."
"There is allegations and evidence of torture" in the prisons, she said, citing lawyers, clients and human rights groups.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland also expressed concern Monday for treatment of prisoners who are "being detained apparently on their skin color and an assumption that they have supported Gadhafi."
"We urge the (National Transitional Council) to honor its stated commitment to the rule of law and respect for the universal human rights of all people in Libya," Nuland said.

Well this is a funny article. A it says they never for to the center. Well they did get to the center before on Friday of last week when the army walked in thinking they will get stiff resistence. They drove in then all the women and children came out celebrating freedom. After the rebels were shooting for 10 minutes in the air taking down pictures and flag snipers starting shooting at them and the women that came out took out thier nives and guns and starting killing the same rebels they were celebebrating with. Over 60 dead and they ran. Now this article claims they don't want to claim thier casualties. Well according to the numbers i saw over 130 dead yesterday and over 50 prisoners. That is high and as for 90% under control. They are right it is under control by the Gaddafi forces. They are the 10%. Must be a language barrier for 90% of Bani Walid under control in the back of the city is a few blocks and trust me you can't have too many men defending that lol. They have lied time after time. I stopped counting after lie 1,000,000. Meanwhil slightly under 50% of Tripoli is under Gaddafi control, Tripoli has actually called back troops from Bani Walid and Sirte for the fear of losing the main Capital, thus making thier forces weaker. CNN reported yesterday that NTC in Sirte were PINNED DOWN lol. They were not sure how the Gaddafi troops got behind them but they did lol. That is called reinforcements. Heck maybe if they were not busy enough shooting in the air and smoking hashish they would have seen a video of a few thousand Tuarg with tanks heading to Sirte on Friday lol. It was reported by many media channels. Maybe if the west media was a little more honest of the reporting the NTC would have a better chance for they think everyone loves them lol. I saw a picture today of SIRTE. 10s of buildings on both sides destroyed i did not know they were all government buildings. Anyone that supports a war of this sort is commiting Geonicide themselves. I plead do your research pictures don't lie. Did you know the NATO government has asked Youtube to limit what they show yes because thier crimes are coming out and too much of it. THIS IS MURDER OF MASS NUMBERS. Now not only men of sirte are fighting so are woman and children for they are defending thier lives and homes for they know they will be bombed so they figure they will fight till the end. Yes children. Put yourself in thier shoes if you support your government and your lifestyle and a foriegn army tells you otherwise what would you do. If you surrender just like that then you are a traitor to your country but if you fight you are a hero to her and your future kids. By now, there was heavy fighting in Abu Salim, Alhadbah, Bab Ben Ghasir, Salehaddeen, Al Nasser, and Al Bahi districts of Tripoli. Some of the district are heavily under Gaddafi control. Another reason why the leadership never moved to Tripoli for the NTC. Meanwhile GREEN FLAG OVER SIRTE, BANI-WALID, SEBHA, ZAWIYA, TAJOURA, TARAGHEN, IM AL-ARANEB, MARZUK, BOV SALIM, ALIJILAT, REGDALINE, ALJAMIL, TARHUNA. Zawiya is a big city and the true army 32 brigade took that city back over. A big loss for the rebels. I saw the video town almost gone and no it is not a old video even though the video was uploaded you can see how the rebels were there for a long time for they had painted highrises in the center top to bottom the colors of the thier flag. LOL. Talk about egos. Watch the video. City practically gone. All there was a video by CNN but never made it to the media that should 10,000s of people out on the street celebrating the freedom and saying how rebels were forced out. But that report never made it on CNN or it Archives but it is on youtube.

TL;DRHey buddy, use paragraphs next time. It can actually make your #$%$ report look more credible.
      • r 7 mths ago
Thanks for the advice but paragraph should not make something more credible i have a very busy person in real life and this is a small contribution i do for people. Considering you think paragrpah make something credible i bet you think all contract have to be computor printed with fine print. But legally somethign written on a napkin at a bar is just as legal so if a full blown contract can be a on a napkin and can be legal then a comment with no paragraphs should be credible just as much. Have fun learny the law

i want to laugh so much. Article say 90%, Al Jazeera says 95%. He says he is standing in the center. Man those guys in the back ground are the cleanest of rebels i have ever seen not even durt on there outfits or faces barely any gun fire for a happy bunch for all we know is they shot when they win. Then the latest pictured of tanks all the building on both sides of the road not even buillet whole. This center has been under attack every hour for months. You tell me nothing he the center or wait Gaddafi men rebuilt it in second instead of firing back. Or even batter maybe they have majic powers. Watch the video guys go to Al Jazeera it is soooo funny. It is obvious these pictures are not real picture and just clips they took from elsewhere and as for the fighter around him i donubt they are from Bani Walid. I would not be shocked if they were actors. CLothes are too clean lol and they sure did not show the enthusiasm for that all the unedted Videos everyone watches and that is over nothing while this is BANI WALID lol. The truth is Bani Walid rebels have retreat to the outskirts. By the way hospital is in the outskirts lol. Rumor also has it they have fled back to the desert for most of them have been called back to Tripolli to defend the capital.

Obama promised change. And the change is .....

Some years ago a group which was called Al-Quadea elements were name changed into Rebels. US, NATO are supporting and fighting for them.

It's really how greed for oil and resources can change Terrorist into Rebels.

"The embargo was imposed as part of the U.N. Security Council resolution that authorized airstrikes to protect civilians from Gadhafi's regime."
The "free world" media just writes stupid stuff like that as if everybody is going to buy that garbage.
The relatives of innocent civilians killed by NATO strongly disagree with that garbage.
    • Salim  •  7 mths ago
Hahahahhhaha, yeah right. Those "Rebels", "Revolutionaries", "killed" Khamis Gaddafi 15 times and he miraculously raises from the dead (man this guy has more lives than a Black cat)... they captures Sirte for about 5-6 times, and it seems they just keep going into Sirte and going back out to "attack" again (What a fun), few weeks ago they "captures" Moussa Ibrahim and capured Sirte (NO WAY), last week they said they can enter Sirte in 24 hours, and got kicked in the #$%$ so hard they run like chickens... This media manipulation and brainwashing must stop. People wake up, OPEN YOUR EYES. Search and look around for the truth... a first step toward truth would be to go to mathaba(dot)net

"gained control of the rest of the oil-rich North African nation" It seems any country with oil is in danger of getting attacked. I think NATO also wants Libya's plutonium for time machines. Run for it, Marty!
