Libyan troops kill 8 rebels near eastern oil town

AJDABIYA, Libya (AP) — Government forces in trucks disguised with rebel flags shelled opposition positions Tuesday near the strategic eastern oil town of Brega, killing eight rebel fighters and wounding dozens more, officials said.

In an audio message directed at a rally of thousands in the town of al-Aziziya, south of Tripoli, embattled ruler Moammar Gadhafi emphasized the importance of Libya's vast oil wealth to his regime, and called the civil war a battle "for our way of life."

Rebel forces have been pushing to seize the front-line town of Brega, which is home to an oil refinery and terminal, for nearly a week, but they say fields of land mines planted by Gadhafi's forces have slowed the advance.

The rebels are fighting in a residential area on Brega's eastern side and control about one-third of the town, spokesman Mohammed al-Rajali said.

Field commander Ahmed Maysawi said rebel forces were working to clear the mines so they can move forward while government troops are occasionally approaching in trucks disguised with rebel flags to shell rebel positions with mounted rocket launchers.

Mohammed Idris, a doctor at the hospital in the nearby city of Ajdabiya, said eight rebels were killed and dozens wounded Tuesday. That raised to at least 34 rebels killed in five days of fighting, according to Idris.

He said the rebels had taken four prisoners, and one dead government soldier had been taken to the rebel hospital. It is unclear how many other government soldier have been killed. The Libyan government rarely provides information on its casualties.

In his audio message, Gadhafi emphasized the importance of Libya's wealth and made a rare reference to the fuel shortages caused by Tripoli's international isolation that have made life hard in government-controlled areas.

"This battle is in our homes. It has affected our children's food, our oil, our oil fields," he said in a clip shown on state TV. "It cuts off electricity, it cuts off gas. This battle is for our children's food, for our way of life."

Some 5,000 people, mainly from the local Warshafana tribe gathered in the main square of al-Aziziya, around 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Tripoli, and cheered wildly, waving green flags.

They chanted their support for Gadhafi and at the end of his speech fired dozens of AK-47s in the air, startling the scores of horses tribesmen had brought to the rally.

Rebels struggling to oust Gadhafi since the uprising against his rule broke out in February control much of Libya's east, but Brega, 450 miles (750 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli, has been under government control since early April.

The two sides have been locked in a stalemate with the rebels unable to advance beyond pockets in the west despite a NATO air campaign against Gadhafi's forces.

Last week, more than 30 nations including the United States gave the rebels a boost by recognizing their National Transitional Council as the country's legitimate government, potentially freeing up billions of dollars in urgently needed cash.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Tuesday that medical services in Libya's western mountains are struggling with a flood of casualties from fighting.

Tuesday's statement said facilities lack medicine to treat patients and vaccines to deal with outbreaks of disease.

An ICRC delegation visited the region and provided bandages and other medical materials.

Arab and Berber rebels wrested control of much of the Nafusa mountains from the government weeks ago. The range stretches from the Tunisian border to within 60 miles (100 kilometers) of Tripoli.

But rebels have been unable to capture the strategic mountain town of Gharyan, which controls the approach to the capital.

The NATO has created unjustified human heartbreak beyond description by their bombs, and through the criminal hands of these rebels by: killing innocent women and children, burning and looting shops and houses, cutting off electricity, gas and children's food and water, all these are human disaster and sufferings, a quite contrary to humanitarian mission that our politicians are supporting blindly to fulfill their ego, and we are speechless! Our opinions are being deleted, and put mostly one sided version on the screen of media to manipulate public opinion; it is a shame in this country!

The rebels have tricked U.S. and NATO by changing their personal conflict into a fight for democracy which is a lie! They are not used to democracy, nor will they ever deliver!

Jt- And supporting nato theives and fibbers is ok? Q pays for his peoples medical and education with the oil money. I don't think anyone in nato can say the same. He must not be that mad-he's got no debt. Maybe he should be OUR president.

perfect Good American. Most people do not choose to fact find and just believe whatever their government tells them as a fact. I know that I never was afraid of Libya but I do know North Korea is a real threat. So lets take out the North Koreans instead of playing in the sand with a bunch of Muslims. What are we trying to accomplish in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen with the bombing? Since when was North Korea let off the hook? President O said he would not follow Bush's policies and here we go bombing the world and we still have CIA base in Somalia, MSNBC released some info on this today on TV. the CIA pays Somalians to jail and get information out of terror suspects in Africa. This info was all released today.

Gadaffi pays his people? Education ? Medical? ha ha , you must be out of this planet.Ghadaffi is a brutal murderer, and the education that you are referring to is only about his green s%&t book. Universities are centers for teaching only his portraits. There is nothing that could be called medical care, these clinics are just buildings that offers almost less than first aid.Ghadaffi does not have debts, but the Libyan people do.They have the debts to themselves, the debts of being isolated for almost half a century. They are poor, ignorant and suffering because Ghadaffi made that possible. If you want Ghadaffi to be your president , GO AHEAD, I´m sure the Libyan people will give you Ghadaffi and many billion dollars on top of that. Just remember when you inaugurate him as a president to remind him that he can rule only 4 years , because he is famous of multiplying anything by 10.

yes, that is the spirit Ghadhafi, go on and win this unfair war. your people want you , you are the man!
Obama, I do not think Americans are really satisfied with spending their money on killing Libyan and other civilians.
      • Mile 10 mths ago
I agree. NATO is pumping weapons to the rebels, thus making the bloodshed much worse than it should be. Just because they are having an uprising, does not mean they are the good gusy, GO GADHAFI!!!!!!!

Recognizing the rebelgovernment as the legitimate government shows the desperation and criminality of their mission. Come to think of it, Is it how long a rulers rules or how the standard of living of the citizen is improved upon? In Africa, Libya is one of the few counties whose government has the citizen at heart. I am not a crusader of ' Gadaffi must stay'. No, but he should respectfully be approached and made to see reason why he should vacate the seat of power instead of reducing Libya to rubbles in the name of protecting citizen. I am disappointed by the role played by UN, US, France and their baby - NATO. Tell me why are you killing Libyan citizens while disguising that you are protecting them?

rebels are tool of the evil west colonialism countries who tried to overthrow the Libyan leader.
    • gabe  •  10 mths ago
Watch out, Gadhafy. these rotten, corrupt criminals have recognized the rebels as the lawful authority of the state, Hillary can accuse you of having committed an act of war, against a "legitimate" nation. No more need to be 'protecting civilians".
    • david  •  10 mths ago
What a ridiculous war!!! seriously... No country can impose law and goverment on another country. That Includes the US. We are making too many enemies, and our economy is struggling. NATO has no right to say Lybia's government is no longer legitimate, Only Lybians can do that. Ghadaffi's government has offered free elections and the rebels refused (as posted on Yahoo News[what the hell????]) Our government would never give power to a thousand rebels hiding in a city (rebels last stand in Benghazi, before NATO bombings). We would never allow this in our country, and we cannot allow this in any country. It is the nature of the beast, and Its international law. To follow with Libya with a clean conscience would mean to follow with any other country which does not follow democratic elections and democratic law.... and that is not a task our generation can make without serious consequences.
    • Isador  •  10 mths ago
Yahoo did not publish my last comment relative to this article. It had to do with the fact that NATO is using the money seized from banks and other investment accounts of Libya, from all over the world, to facilitate and finance these rebels. It amounts to billions of dollars. This is one of the biggest criminal acts by Nations and Military Groups in the history of the world.
    • George  •  10 mths ago
      1) why is this still going on ? 2) why are we still helping?...How weak can these so called rebels be if they cant even win with NATO ?
    • Old Soldier  •  10 mths ago
Okay a bunch of Libyan rebels were killed and who cares. Tell me yahoo, how many American troops were injured in Iraq and Afghanistan today? Just because Obama is bringing some of them home doesn't mean it's not hot over there.
    • Sammy Bernal  •  10 mths ago
only they know the truth behind this war. The american people get the biased, chopped up version of the story.
    • Liam Duke  •  10 mths ago
While millions of people are chanting for the support of Gadhafi, Hillary and Sarkozy are acting like deafs, but for few rebels and speculation of civilians' deaths, they invaded the Sovereign nation created real human tragedy!
