Libyans say Gadhafi hometown could fall in days

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libyan military officials said Wednesday that revolutionary forces could capture Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte within days.

The three-week-old siege of the Gadhafi stronghold on the Mediterranean coast has been largely stalemated. Fighters loyal to Libya's interim government traded shelling Wednesday with Gadhafi loyalists holed up in the center of the city, but the fighters made no significant advances.

Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Ahmed Bani told reporters in Tripoli that fighters surround Sirte and "no more than 20 percent is outside of rebel control."

"We've reached the point where we will be able to completely dominate Sirte in the next few days," he said.

Still, the 20 percent referred to the main residential area of Sirte that the fighters have been unable to take despite heavy battles. Loyalists have been based in the Ouagadougou Conference Center, a hall Gadhafi built for international summits, and a nearby hospital, from which they have been able to dominate the surrounding residential areas.

Deputy Defense Minister Fawzy Abu Kataf said the forces are delaying an all-out assault on the city to allow residents to flee. But he insisted the city could fall within days.

"It is an ethical and humanitarian issue that is delaying the liberation," he said. "We just need the Libyan residents from Sirte to get out of the way. ...It is going to two to three days till liberation."

Fighters earlier this week took the strategic suburb of Abu Hadi, 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the city center, allowing them to encircle the city on three sides — with the fourth side blocked by the Mediterranean Sea.

Abu Hadi is a center for Gadhafi's tribe, the Gadhadhfa, and the capture set off a looting spree by fighters, who broke into and burned homes of tribe members, making off with gold and other possessions.

the developed world love anywhere there is oil, and they are ready to do anything to destroy that country so as to owe the oil and control the country. take for instance Oboma is saying American soilders are living Iraq comes end of this year, now Republicans are not happy yet the same people who are saying their children is being killed in Iraqi. what is happening here? Again killing Gadhafi and trained rebels who carry the assult now they same people want to probe how Gadhafi was killed. this is ungodly act is not good at all, just to create more future problems in Libya is what you want? why not allow the new government to set up a timetable for proper election instead of creating confusion, Gadhafi is dead case close let Libyan's begin a new life. The Right Group and no Right Group should please allow peace to regin in Libya. Thank you very much Right Group but please stall clear from creating more problem. God bless all who read and understand.

Ten years on after Iraqs "liberation" and the third largest oil and gas reserve in the world, yet still no electricity or stable infrastructure. Libya will be another NATO ghetto with all the oil and gas going into the hands of a few corrupt elites and foreign gangsters of NATO Murder, Inc.
And, like Iraq other regional players will be sharpening their collective knives for any opportunity to feed on the scapes that fall from the carcus of once a stable and prosperious nation (not perfect), but functional.
The US-NATO team has not produce a stable democratic nation in all of its efforts to kill there way into global dominance, so tell me what "democracy" is the pundits talking about?
This is in the background of an American and European economic indebitness that is on the verge of collapse and rebellion with the people of these interventionist governments tilting on the edge of economic rein.
Does one actually think that these wars are going to be able to pay-off the trillions of dollars in taxpayer indebtness used to finances these violent takeovers. I assure you not a dime of Iraqi oil, Libyan oil will be part of any return on our leaderships investment of our taxes on these corporate wars.
If, Syria and Iran are in the cross-hairs of these thugs, then we will be sleeping under a collective bridge wishing we didn't put a stop to these crimes of our government and the UN.

most posters complaining about Libya would have been in England during the American revolution, #$%$ about how the radicals were going to make it hard to get to "our resources" and threaten "our friends". You wouldn't know how to fight for freedom.

amen, people also forget that Gadhafi was repsonsible for the bombing of that pan am flight hich killed americans and yet they supported going after saddam hussain who was not responsible for any deaths on americans, people may argue that he funded terrorists well dont ya think that Gadhafi also may have funded them too??? I also think from a humanitarian point of view that we need to help the poor people of Syria who are being murdered for expressing opposition for thier oppresive ruler

You can say what you want about W, but he did let the Iraqis put Sadaam on trial, and his sons died in a fire fight. Obama just murdered Gadhafi's grand children, who were unarmed and sitting ducks. He is also the first President I know of that's murdered/assasinated and american citizen, with no trial, no jury etc... Both Obama and Bush should be put in prison, but Obama should do a lot more time than W.

The fighting rats just can’t shoot targets, they need to blast their way indiscriminately causing lots of collateral damage. Liberation, freedom & democracy aren’t the same as looting, vengeance & killing innocents. Indeed NTC & NATO knows that, so aren’t these two the King of rats. But the war game isn't over yet as the Libyans watch their country ruined by NATO and its rats.
