City provides tips to reduce windblown trash

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The City of El Paso Environmental Services Department (ESD) is asking residents to help reduce windblown trash by not rolling their recycling bins to the curb on high-wind days unless they are at least half full, the City announced Wednesday, April 24 in a press release.

The City says that on windy days, especially with wind gusts reaching over 40 mph, recycling bins that hold loose recyclables can be tipped over, contributing to windblown trash.

The following tips were provided by the City on how residents can help reduce windblown trash:

  • Recyclables are lighter than other household waste. If your blue bin is less than half full wait until your next scheduled to roll out your bin. If you roll your bin to the curb do not tape the lid shut as this will prevent the bin from being emptied.

  • Trash placed in gray bins should be bagged, which makes it less likely to become windblown litter.

  • Dispose of extra recyclable and household waste by visiting a Citizen Collection Station, a trash drop-off site, or the Greater El Paso Landfill on a non-high wind warning day.
