Habitat for Humanity hosting annual ‘Women Build’

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Starting Monday, women from around Mid-Michigan are coming together to help turn one house into a home, for one Lansing resident – and the 6 news crew is also helping to make it all come to life.

Women Build is an exciting event because we’re going to bring out so many volunteers, almost 100 volunteers this week. And it’s just a tremendous amount of work that gets accomplished here and a tremendous amount of goodwill that gets built in the community,” Brent Taylor, CEO Habitat for Humanity Capital Region.

For the next 5 days WLNS-TV, Jackson, LAFCU, Delta Dental of Michigan, leaders of local nonprofits and board members will help to solve the housing affordability crisis by framing this south Lansing home with future habitat homeowner, Carly.

Officials said Carly has 5 kids and has been a Lansing renter- and will turn into a homeowner when the build is completed this year.

“It’s wonderful for Carly to be able to see just how many people in this community that aren’t friends or family and don’t even know her are willing to come out and lend a hand to help her and her family achieve their dream of owning a home,” Taylor said.

Taylor said the build has been a well-received event for 30 years in the Lansing area, and the lineup for today’s event includes roof and finishing work

“The fact that we’re building something tangible here and people will be able to drive past two years from now and know that they lent a hand in building this home,” Taylor said.

Taylor says the house is expected to be complete in mid-September, and if you are interested in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity- you can visit their website at habitat.org.
