Linemen Appreciation Week highlights the important, dangerous job we depend on

STAPLETON, Ala. (WKRG) — This week is Linemen Appreciation Week, a week that also includes Linemen Appreciation Day on April 18.

According to National Linemen Appreciation Day’s website, it is “a time to express our utmost appreciation to the great men and women that work so hard for us every day. It’s our honor to celebrate the hard work, innovation, and dedication of Electrical Lineworkers.”

Linemen are especially important after major storms, but the appreciation day notes the hard work they do day in and day out. One of the best in the business, Jeff Malone with Baldwin EMC, has been doing this job for more than three decades. He spends his days working in the bucket truck, no matter rain, cold, or dark, but says it is not just a job — it’s a way to help people.

Malone says the best part of the job is doing just that. “I guess restoring that power after a storm. Knowing that people depend on that.”

And the worst part? “That cold rainy February morning about two a.m. that’s the worst part.”

At the end of the day, he says linemen don’t just restore power, they restore comfort, convenience, and security. He says, there is no other job like it.
