Lions claim cornerback Murphy, waive Barnes

The Detroit Lions could have multiple reinforcements for their beleaguered secondary this week against the Titans.

The Lions expect third-round pick Bill Bentley to practice this week and also claimed Jerome Murphy on waivers from the Saints. To make room on the roster, the Lions waived cornerback Kevin Barnes. Detroit traded a seventh-round pick for Barnes in August.

Bentley is expected to be in the base defense eventually, and possibly as soon as Sunday's meeting with the Titans. He's been out for several weeks with concussion-like symptoms after impressing in the preseason.

Murphy, 25, played 14 games for the Rams in 2010. He was a third-round pick from the University of South Florida. Murphy was placed on injured reserve at the end of training camp last season.

Murphy was waived by the Rams on Sept. 1 and claimed by the Saints. He played in the first two games of the 2012 season before New Orleans waived him Monday.
