Lionsgate, Buena Vista International Team For ‘Mockingjay 2′ Release In Russia

Expanding on their previous overseas collaborations, Lionsgate is teaming with Buena Vista International for the Russian theatrical release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. Russia was among the top markets for Mockingjay – Part 1 with over $15M in grosses, but the devaluation of the ruble in the past year has hit Hollywood hard. By comparison, Catching Fire made about $23M the year prior while local currency totals were closer to par. Locking Mockingjay 2 in with BVI brings Lionsgate a well-established, stable partner in the volatile Russian market.

BVI will launch Mockingjay 2 on November 19 in Russia in all available formats, including IMAX 3D, as part of the day-and-date global rollout. The partnership with BVI will also cover the rest of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The first Mockingjay now has a worldwide total of about $755M in box office. The first three installments have grossed more than $2.3B.

Lionsgate’s Summit label and BVI have previously hooked up successfully on the Japanese releases of Red, Source Code and Tree Of Life as well as the Japanese and Spanish releases of the Step Up franchise.

The Lionsgate and Summit labels will continue their theatrical output deals with West Company and Central Partnership, respectively, for the rest of their theatrical slates in Russia and the CIS.
